We were at the beach last week, so swimming a lot, and DD2 woke up in the middle of the night with a sore ear. She whimpered and cried throughout the night about it. The next day, it was better and the next day, better still, so I never took her to the doctor.

Can a child have such a short-lived ear infection? Is swimmer's ear just another word for an ear infection? Just wondering what it was and so short-lived (not that I mind!)

Maybe she just got water in her ear that worked itself out while she slept?

Based on my recent experience with swimmer's ear...it's not the same as a typical ear infection. Typically, an ear infection is in the middle ear. Swimmer's ear is in the ear canal. An ear infection is treated with time or oral antibiotics. Swimmer's ear gets antibiotic and steroid ear drops.

I wonder too if it was just water in the ear.

I am glad she's fine!
