View Full Version : Would you point and laugh if I wore a fanny pack to WDW?

So I'm considering a fanny pack. There. I said it.

http://www.amazon.com/JanSport-Waistpacks-Waistpack-Chocolate-Pattern/dp/B00264GF3Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1282874008&sr=8-3

I really want to have valuable essentials (money, id, camera, phone) attached to my body. Other supplies like dipes, wipes, water, snacks, sunscreen can go in backpack and can be left in stroller. I just think I'd be uncomfortable leaving pack with valuables on the stroller, and I don't want to carry a heavy pack on the rides when I won't need anything in the pack while on the ride.

I'll already be toting a 25+ lb. toddler.

Seriously, though, am I setting myself up for ridicule?

No one will point and laugh! Have you been to WDW? A fanny pack won't even ping the radar. It's NMS, but seriously, no one will notice, and I'm sure you won't be the only one. :)

I would not laugh at you, most definitely. But, my first thought is that I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one... of course upon further ponderation, what other practical solution is there?

I tend to think that even if you do something ridiculous, all the other people at WDW will be strangers, they have no idea who you are and you'll never see them again, so who cares what they think? (I'd just remove it for pictures so a few years from now, my children won't make fun of me like we make fun of our mom in the pictures from the 80's :ROTFLMAO:)

:yeahthat:

I use (an older version of) this bag at WDW and I love it. I wear it messenger style and it works great.

I usually go with a smallish messenger style bag, too. Lots of options there - Vera Bradley Hipster, Overland that Beth already shared, Lands End Little Tripper, and so on. More my style than a fanny pack.

But yeah, fanny packs are everywhere in WDW. You won't be alone if you go that route.

I wore one. Sure, it's not exactly fashionable, but it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO handy!

Nope, not here. We just ordered 2 from LLBean (waiting for them to come in). We plan on using them in October for our WDW trip.

I have come to the realization that this trip will be about comfort first, style second. But I did buy some cute dry-fit running shorts and shirts and some new sneakers. Hopefully that will camouflage the dreaded fanny back, oops sorry, make that waist pack :).

OK, just to clarify--I was thinking of wearing the pack under my shirt, not sporting anything stylish.

But on further consideration, I remembered a neck/waist pouch that I used when living abroad about 15 years ago, and, yes, I still have it!

This isn't the exact model, but it's close:

http://www.eaglecreek.com/accessories/security_id/MicroFlex-Neck-Pocket-40472/

It will fit my requirements (camera, keys, tickets, money) and best of all, I already have it (FREE)!

It would depend on the rest of your outfit. :) If you were wearing mom jeans, a baggy t-shirt and white sneakers (something irrational that I consider wrt fashionability) then the fanny pack would be the final straw. But, otherwise good looking outfit? I'd be thinking you could have found a better thing than a fanny pack but accept that sometimes it is the most practical thing. :)

My dh wore one like that neck pouch when we were on vacation in Belize. The problem was how it showed through his shirt and looked bulky and not so good in pictures. Practical though.

Seriously, if I laughed at everybody wearing a fanny pack at Disney World, there would be very little time for anything else. They are everywhere. And they are not nearly as ridiculous looking when compared to some of the other things people wear to Disney. It is definitely not a fashion hot spot.

Point and laugh? No. Think it was really ill-advised fashion? Yes.

If you are considering it, just go for it.
I personally could not bring myself to do it. Not even an LV one. But I think a thin, over the shoulder messenger-type of bag would do the same thing.

I wouldn't do it personally but there are a BUNCH of folks there with fanny packs so no one will notice.

hmmm. The fanny pack is pretty funny. Maybe not a point and laugh but an eye-roll. lol

In all seriousness, I have seen quite a few people at Disney with them. If you have the guts to wear one, I say more power to you. I am not nearly that brave.

Only if you were wearing coordinating leg warmers and side pony tail!! :ROTFLMAO: Otherwise, no!! :p

Seriously, I had no idea that so many people thought waist packs or "fanny packs" (*shudder*, I admit that is a dreadful name) were that bad. I mean if you are going to wear it over your shirt, at the front of your waist and cinched tight, it would look dorky. But what about leaving it loose at the waist, somewhat covered up by your shirt? We tried them on at REI and DH is going to wear it with the pouch on his lower back. You could only notice it from the back. Am I missing something?

My shirts aren't long and baggy enough to cover up a fanny pack. Not a terrible idea getting dh to wear it. :) Still, I just go with the belief that they are dorky regardless of clothes. Bad clothes certainly make them worse though. But, they are practical and there are times at amusement parks that I could suck it up and use one. But, I can't. :)

I think they're just kinda dorky-lookin'. I'm a fashion girl, I like fashion. Fanny packs are not fashion. But you should do what's comfortable to you, and what other people think about a fanny pack is just not that important. I'm sure I look dorky to others half the time. It's all relative :-)

I think they're pretty widely considered a fashion "don't", but like I said up top, WDW ain't exactly Rodeo Drive when it comes to fashion! I doubt people will notice.

Same here re: baggy shirts. In fact, that just seems like it would make you look preggo or misshapen.

Eh, I am not really bothered by what people think of me as a rule, but the comment that someone would roll their eyes at me if I wore a waist pack made me think to myself "ooh, ouch. that's kind of harsh".

It's not going to stop me from wearing what I want, but it did make me pause for a moment. In general, I take care in my appearance, so I don't think I'll end up on anybody's "what not to wear" list, waist pack and all,.

I guess a waist pack is the mini-van of the fashion world. You have the people who see the merits of it and other people who wouldn't be caught with one.

If I pointed and laughed at every fanny pack in Disney, I would be pointing and laughing all day! They are all over the place. As PP said, Disney is no Rodeo Drive.

Personally, I wouldn't wear one on a bet, but that's just my style. What I do like and recommmend to all is the Le Sportsac Kasey bag- it's a cross body style, lays very flat, and has several pockets. I never have to remove it for a ride.

This thread is funny. I wouldn't point and laugh, but I do preferr the small cross-body style, like pp mentioned. I've seen them at TJ max for pretty cheap.

I have that one from my college days travelling in europe. It was ok, but I do have to say a little uncomfortable/bulky under the shirt. It does give you a little more sense of security that someone's not going to rip your pack off.

I wear these type of bags in my everyday life. Very cute and functional. The problem is my DH. We need something unisex that he won't be embarrassed to carry. No "murse" or "man-bag" for him, :ROTFLMAO:.

Same here re: baggy shirts. In fact, that just seems like it would make you look preggo or misshapen.

The plan is to carry it with the pouch resting on the back. I don't want anything to attract attention to my belly. OTOH, my a$$ doesn't need it either.....

And not to beat a dead horse, the only reason we are going to buy a waist pack is because we will be carrying DS3 in an Ergo carrier, so we need something easy to exchange. OK, off my soap box. Really, this has been an interesting thread.

No way would I carry my valuables in a pack on my back - too easy for someone behind you to unzip it and help themselves. And yes, it even happens in WDW. I won't even carry my valuables in the outer pocket of a backpack for that reason.

I bought this small crossbody bag specifically for Disney & it was great. http://www.overlandequipment.com/#/overview/bayliss

I just wore it to Great America a few weeks ago as well. Same company as the Donner, but lots smaller. Enough room for all the essentials, including sunglasses case & a compact camera - but still lies flat against the body. It is still not super fashionable but very practical w/o being overly dorky IMO.

And if you really, really want to wear a fanny pack, the strap adjusts so you can! :)

Dh wore some weird backpack/messenger bag hybrid that I found at the Eddie Bauer outlet. It was small, like a backpack, but with only one cross body strap. Hard to explain, but it worked.

I don't wear fanny packs, but apparently the belt purse or hip bag is becoming slightly more acceptable. Fiona on Burn Notice wore one ( ;) ) and I googled and found some links:

eta: I have and like the OE Donner bag listed above. (messenger style bag)

A) that's cuter than a fanny pack.
B) I still wouldn't wear it.
C) SHE HAS NO HIPS. :)

This is my point about the Louis Vuitton fanny packs I have seen. On me, it would still look like a granny fanny pack, and not a high fashion accessory.

Oh, she is definitely ridiculously thin. I was just being silly when I posted it. I remember seeing the epi and asking myself if she was wearing a fanny pack ;) But, until today, I didn't know there were sites about the fanny pack she wore!

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion -- I bought one of the Overland Equipment donner bags for use as an easy diaper bag in the parks, based on this recommendation, and it was perfect for our Disney trip last week! It fit perfectly under the Maclaren and also was really easy to take out and wear messenger style when we went on rides, etc. Highly recommend!!!
