DH wore me down and we got DS's hair cut. Here are photos of the sad event. I left the house with a baby and came home with a cute little boy.

DS is 15 months. His hair is curly/wavy in the back and straight on the top. The hair over his ears is long and wings up (more than one person has said he looks like the Flying Nun). The hair in front is starting to get in his eyes. We're not having any functional problems with his hair though. Three people have now told me "she's so cute!" DH and BFF are lobbying for a haircut. Most people, including my mom, think its cute and tell me not to cut it. I keep going back and forth. I know he will look like a little boy when we get it cut so I don't want to. I guess I'm looking for permission not to cut it -OR- good reasons to get it cut. Help.

I think you should trim it up yourself at home - no need to cut it short or totally shape it, but you can cut it so it's not mullety/girly looking and still have it look like baby hair :).

I've been cutting DS's hair since he was 4 months old and here is his first before/after. I was really happy with how it came out. (Keep in mind he was really little here, so your DS has more hair, but the principle of just cleaning up the ends with a few snips still applies).

I'm so not brave enough to cut it myself. But snipping it a little is a good idea (maybe I can have a friend do it). If it looks like a mullet, I can always take him in for a real haircut. Here is a photo from today:

We took DS in at about 9 months, after his daycare put the front up in a ponytail to keep it out if his eyes. He did look like a little boy afterward.

I had really hoped to wait until he was a year, but I was happy with it.

OMG, he is so cute. Don't cut that cute hair (unless you really want to...) My theory is that strangers will never get gender right, even given ample cues. You'll be so annoyed when you cut it and people keep saying "oh, she's so cute."

Oh my goodness, he's ADORABLE! Don't change a thing! A FWIW, he looks like a boy to me :).

Well, I guess I'm in the minority. I'd give it a trim--let some of that curly/waviness stay, but a little shape-up for it. He's ADORABLE though!

I gave my son's hair little trims up until he was over 3 years old. I just couldn't
cut his hair. He had long white blond hair for so long. He was called a girl
all the time. Even when dressed in his camo outfits. Whatever. I loved
his hair. I cut it off when he requested it to be cut off.

Don't cut your son's hair!!!! His hair is adorable and he totally looks like a boy!
I don't get the girl comments. He is such a boy!

We cut DS's hair on the front porch with a set of clippers when he was about 6 months old because he had a faux hawk going on since birth & his hair was all sorts of different lengths:( We cut it too short, IMO, but it grew back (we didn't have to cut it again till he was 14 months). Even when it was short, people would refer to him as she! Cut it when you are ready, he is adorable!

If it's getting in his eyes, I would get a trim.

OK, this might not be the case for you but here is what happened with DS1...

He had VERY Straight hair on the top and sides but the little triangle at the nape was curly. I trimmed the front and around the ears as long as I could and finally got a real cut at about 15 months. It looked SO much better and I regret waiting so long because...once we cut the straight part, his whole head erupted (in a few weeks) in ringlets!!! It was SOOOO cute!

Now at 5 his hair is wavy, but it doesn't really go ringlets (more bushy) so we keep it pretty short.

Good luck! I know how you feel. Your little guy is really cute!

I shaved off DD's hair when she was 4 months, in my culture we believe you have to give the first hair cut way before they start babbling or else it will interfere with them talking. And we usually shave the baby hair so it grows back better and fuller.

DS got a cut at 23 months. Like your DS--straight on top, curly in the back. He had a serious mullet when we got it cut. She just cut the back and put in some layers and it looked so cute, but I don't regret waiting that long. DS hated getting the haircut, so now I will just cut it myself. (I've done that once.) He still has his curls, which makes me happy. They are so sweet.

Your DS is adorable. I'd wait.

Your son's hair looks a lot like one of my boys hair. He will be 14 months old next week. My son's hair isn't quite as long but is wavy/curly like that and does have quite a bit of it. My husband and I aren't ready to cut his hair even though my mom thinks we should.

I say don't cut it. I think it's cute! If it's getting in his eye's then maybe trim it.

DS got his first haircut at 7 months. I did it. I actually only trimmed the sides. The rest was ok. His sides were 2-3 inches longer than everything else and they winged back. It just looked odd. I just trimmed the sides and let it be. DS got his first REAL haircut at age 1 and it was sooo nice b/c it was all even and he just looked so cute (DS had straight hair that did nothing but hang there).

I'm very curious about this thread! We're in the same situation - I could have written the OP, except my DS is a few months older.

It's interesting to me that the opinions I've gotten seem very divided on gender lines. The men (including a couple of friends, my DH, my dad and my FIL) say "When are you going to give him a haircut?" and the women (friends, my mom and me) say "No, don't cut it, it's so cute!" DS's hair is blond and curly, which I think looks cute.

Don't cut it yet!! He is adorable. Just dress him a lot of blue if you are worried about people thinking he is a girl. He is way to cute like he is.

Don't cut it!! It's so beautiful.

But then, I just got my 2.9 year old his first haircut, and even then it's pretty long. I got a lot of "she" comments, but I just ignored them. Long hair is in on boys!

Hmmm...well, my Ds has hair just like that. We cut his sometime after he turned 9 months old because we just prefer a more clean cut little boy look. I did love the slight curls, but I don't regret getting it cut. He looks so cute now.

I think if it's getting in his eyes, definitely at least trim it up. I did that once when the hair on the sides of his head kept falling over his ears. That drove me nuts!

Such a cutie!! I would maybe trim it up a little bit, but not a ton.

Meanwhile DS's hair has really just started to come in and DH thinks that I need to trim up around the ears....

Such cute little ones!

I agree with others who have said don't cut it yet. My DS has hair like that, and I haven't cut it yet, either. I also get the "she's so cute" comments, but oh well. I'm waiting. :)

As everyone else has said--he is totally adorable! And don't touch that hair!

My son at 11 mo has similar wavy sometimes crazy hair, it is not as long as your son's, but I would love for him to have that same look as it grows! I am a fan of little boys with longer moppy hair :)

Yay! Thanks for so many "don't cut it yet" votes!! Here is my plan. We are visiting family next weekend and I am going to have my SIL help me trim up the sides a little bit. I'm just not ready to part with those curls!

I know this is after you just updated us on your choice, but I just wanted to add my vote for DON'T CUT IT!!! I will say without question that I am the type that would let my DS's hair grow long and crazy until he was...oh I don't know, ready to go to school! I love love love little boys with long baby hair!! To me, it's never going to be the same again after you cut it....it's only baby hair once!

BTW, the pictures posted of the 2 DS's are adorable!!!!

I've never been sentimental about baby hair. My older son was SO hairy that I had to start cutting his hair regularly at around 4 months. He'd had 5 cuts at the salon by the time he was 1!

But... my younger son has soft, silky hair and I'm finding it hard to cut! I trimmed around the ears once but now he needs more trimmed. I haven't been able to bring myself to do it. It's just so soft and curly, and looks so cute after a bath! I can't believe I've become sentimental about this. But he really looks like he has a mullet.

I have only cut DS's hair a few times.. trimmed the back and some areas where it was snarling up, and just a little around the ears... He is the same age.

What a cutie! Love both pics.
 I know what you mean about mourning the loss of your "baby"...I took DS for a cut at 6 months and was so sad that he changed from a baby to a little boy. But your son is so adorable! I think the new 'do suits him.
