DS2 has started to threaten jumping out the window when he's upset. I have no idea where that's come from but he's having a really tough time adjusting with the arrival of DS4 so we're working on it. Anyway, he's 5 but really doesn't understand danger to that degree & I would not be surprised if in a fit of anger he actually tried to jump out the window.
(Yes, I know he has issues)

So, we do open our windows during the day - they're all double-hung & have screens & storm windows. We can't have anything like bars "fixed" because these windows would also be fire escape if needed. How do I lock these windows so that he's safe?

HI Allison,

One possibility would be to open the windows just a small amount and then take a piece of wood and wedge it in on top of the window so it can't be opened any farther. That way you could still get some air flow but he wouldn't be able to fit through the opening to get out. They also make something called vent locks that accomplish the same thing, like this: http://www.window-bars.com/online-store/scstore/p-1051340BB.html

Or, would something like this work? http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=536980&cmSource=Search

I'm not sure if he'd be able to undo the emergency latch on his own, though and it seems a bit pricey to me, but could be an option.

Good luck!
