Buying / selling on non-local craigslist

Has anyone bought or sold an item on a craigslist that was not local to them? What is the best way to pay or accept payment so both parties are protected? Is paypal the only option? Thanks!!!

I bought some Pottery Barn curtains once from a non-local seller who shipped them to me. I paid via PayPal. Somewhat risky, but for $35 I was willing to do it. Not sure I would do that for something more expensive since you can't inspect it AND you don't have the "safety" of eBay feedback/Buyer Protection.
