Is a child named Jaya likely to be a girl or a boy? The family is either Indian or Sri Lankan.

Jaya is common Indian girl's name. ....I would assume that it would be used for a girl in Shri Lanka, as well...

Jaya is a girl, yes. Jai or Jay is a boy's name.

Most def Indian.

Probably short for something else, like Jayalakshmi

It's a girl's name. For a male, it could be short for something like Jayaswami (last name - I know several South Indian guys who go by shortened versions of their last names). Actually, in most of the South (to my knowledge) the first name goes last, i.e. Smith Peter Ian, shortened to S. P. Ian - Peter could be another family name or given name). In my parent's generation (not sure what happens now), the first name would become the family name, due to the order! So our surname is my dad's given name :)

Its definitely not a sri lankan name, unless its short for Jayalakshmi, which is a girls name.
