DH and I watched CBS Sunday morning this weekend and saw a really cool editorial on school lunches in France and all of the sanitary regulation they do and the fresh foods they use. It was incredible in comparison to here!

Then I saw this today on CNN about the effort to get more funding for public school lunches, a whopping 6 cents per student. It irks me that politicians are trying to cut the funding of a bill that would (hopefully) provide healthier choices for kids down to 3 cents a kid. Totally lame congress!

I know alot of people will say, oh I pack my kids lunch etc. I am thinking about this in regard to the children that receive their main source of nutrition through school via free or reduced priced breakfast/lunch.

Can't watch the video on my broken computer.

My school has worked really, really hard to provide fresh, local, healthy food. Their menu is great! Unfortunately, like you noted, they were losing money on every lunch last year. So, they switched food service providers and while the food is still really good and much, much (much...) better than traditional school lunches it came at the expense of supporting quite as much local, natural food as they were able to do last year. Still, they work really hard to not have crap and they have succeeded so far.

It is ridiculous how much they have to work with. Did you see Jamie Oliver's "Food Revolution" and how hard it was to do food on budget?

I didnt see food revolution. But the CNN article actually talks about how one school got themselves out of the red by serving healthier items, neat!

Wouldn't it be wonderful?! Ever since I saw Super Size Me (healthy lunches served in Appleton, WI) I thought...wow, why isn't this happening??
