What are you doing for DC this year? DS has a Steelers costume I picked up at a consignment sale. DD wants to be a dancer. I found a dance costume that she can wear with leggings and a shirt underneath for warmth. DH says I need some sort of head dress or something to go with it to make it more of a costume. Should I just go buy a "dancers" costume? Where would I find something that DD could wear on her head for a dancer to go with the dance costume I found (also at a consignment sale--looks like a someone used it for a performance).

Well, for DD, I have 6 different plush costumes that I stocked up on from Old Navy. So far, she says she wants to be the butterfly. I made an airplane (yes, an airplane, not a pilot) costume for DS last year. He changes his mind frequently, so I haven't even seriously discussed it with him, but I'm fairly certain it will be handmade. I do really enjoy making costumes, actually, so I don't mind.

Sorry, just reread your OP...realized I didn't answere the end of your question. What sort of head-piece did you have in mind? Is it a ballet dancer or an ethnic dancer or a modern dancer costume? I might be able to think of some easy to make ideas if you could give more details.

We do home-made costumes, though not necessarily sewn from scratch.

In answer to your question about a headpiece...it really depends on what *kind* of dance costume you have for DD, but I think you could pick one of several options without going out and buying an entire costume. For example, if it's princess-y or ballerina-y, how about a tiara? For just about any style of dance costume, you could hot-glue some colorful feathers, rosettes, rhinestones or ribbon (or even tulle, bunched up however you want it) to a headband. Just pick colors that coordinate with the rest of the costume. Another thought: buy some wired star-garland from the craft store and use it (perhaps with ribbon?) to make a little wreath/halo type headpiece. You could allow some of the ribbons to stream down in the back for a pretty effect. If I were in your place, I'd probably try to rig up something rather than go out and buy a whole new costume, but that's just my 2 cents!

It depends what DS wants to be. DIY pirate, cowboy, garbage collector and Speed Racer costumes, but purchased Tigger (1st Halloween) and Spiderman (easier than trying to make all those straight lines).

OP - couldn't you just do some sort of fancy hairband or poofy thing in her hair? I'm thinking sparkles.

what kind of dancer? Like a Ballerina or jazz dancer or flapper or ???

I guess I'm kind of doing both. I've been thinking about a ladybug for DD since last year (when I found a bumblebee costume at a consignment sale that I just couldn't pass up.) She was adorable & I'm glad we did it, but this year I'm determined she should be a ladybug.

Anyway, my vision includes a homemade tutu with little black spots on it. I've seen many of the costumes out there & they're adorable, but I really want to make the tutu on my own. I just don't want to make the wings. So...maybe I'll just buy wings. On the other hand, for the $$ I'll spend, I could probably buy a ladybug costume that would be just fine...

So basically, I'm no help whatsoever. I think your DD's costume will be fine with or without headpiece. If you want something easy, just get some sequins that match the outfit & glue them all over a headband or a decorative comb. Good luck & let us know what you decide on!

Thanks! That's the costume I keep looking at and if I buy wings for $14, I may as well spend another 4 and get the whole costume! It is super-cute and I know DD would be adorable in it. That's probably what I'll end up going with...

Homemade Buzz and Woody. I keep looking at the fabric pile and shaking my head b/c I have no idea when I'm going to find the time to do it. I love crafty stuff, so I try to force myself to have some hobby time with these projects, but there are just never enough hours in the day!
