View Full Version : The Long sweater, leggings, boots look

So, this looks great on the model, but am I alone in thinking that I'd feel too "exposed" with a sweater this short? Even with tights, it feels like I shouldn't be wearing a dress/sweater this short? It's basically a minidress, right? The tall boots only look good with a shorter dress, right?

Could you wear a longer tunic with a shorter skirt, tights, and boots? That might feel like I have more coverage.

This is unrelated, but isn't this just gorgeous!

Maybe if you try it with the thicker type leggings? Or jean leggings? I don't think it looks too short, but if you feel exposed I think a short straight skirt might work. I guess you'd have to try it and see the whole thing together to know how you feel bout it.

BTW I would never wear something this short with bare legs, but the thick leggings make me feel more comfortable about it. And also looking around and seeing that everyone and their mother is wearing even shorter things with leggings. :wink2:

Bad flashbacks....first link.....called sweater dress in the 80's........wore with leggings or stir-up pants....boots were shorter than the ones pictured.

I agree--as long as you wear it with leggings (or even really thick opaque tights) and the dress/tunic itself is not super tight, I think it would look really cute. Tall boots would also be OK with a skirt IMO, I also like the leggings or skinny jeans look with cute flats. Personally I am OK with leggings and tunics as long as the tunic covers my butt and doesn't cling anywhere (a bit different than my standards the first time leggings were popular :))

:yeahthat:
Ha ha, I almost forgot about the stirrup pants! I still have a sweater dress from the 80's tucked away somewhere...it's purple with green handprints all over. Is it time to pull it out now? :ROTFLMAO:

Also, that model is probably a lot taller than you are (or I am )! So the dress would be longer on you. I think with leggings or thick tights and tall boots it would look nice. I don't think it would work with a skirt under the dress. Of course, I am not all that stylish, so maybe you should do the opposite of what I say.:)

I was in the mall the other day and saw lots of people trying to do this look, but they were wearing tights. I knew this because I could see through them... in various places.... :duh: Leggings are the way to go!

This look can go horribly wrong on the majority of real women. Three way mirror it, for sure!

Wow! I love both looks! I was thinking a long fisherman's sweater would also go great with leggings.

I am now old enough that all I can think when I see today's fashions is that I already wore them in junior high! I wore long sweaters, leggings and high boots up the yin yang! Also did the skinny jeans (they had zippers at the ankle then) and big plaid shirt, sometimes with a belt.

I can't help thinking that if I already wore it once in my lifetime, I should probably steer clear of it now, but I do love the look!

I have these (http://www.herroom.com/Bali-B205-Invisibles-Firm-Control-Leggings---2-Pair.shtml) leggings and I feel a lot less self-conscious in them! More control, less... jiggle? :hysterical:

True. I'd be more comfortable with midthigh, although I'm most comfortable with just above the knee by maybe an inch or 2 at most.

That would be a cozy look. I really have to see how I look in leggings. I bought some HUE ones at NR. I hope they don't bag in the knees.

Wow, I've never thought of control top leggings. How comfortable is that?
I do see the 80's coming back in a way and it's :rotflmao: I even saw some stirup pants in a store window the other day.

So, when people wear leggings and boots, do they also wear socks?

Another look I have a hard time pulling off is the skinny belt. Looks great on models, but not for muffin tops!

People were bending over (with kids, to pick up bags, whatever) and I saw way too many butts and crotches!

IMO, it's a great look for women who are long and lean. Works on other body types as well but you have to make sure the look is balanced.

Having said that, OP, I think that dress could easily go wrong. I think long belted sweaters and cardis are easier to pull off.

I really like that first dress! Alot! The only problem is, once it gets any colder, you can't wear it. I'm kind of scrathcing my head at all these fall/winter dresses and sweaters with short sleeves. Some of them look great with a long-sleeved T underneath, but something a bit nicer like that dress, I don't think so.

Heres what I recently bought at Old Navy, and I think it looks really cute!

Sweater http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=26195&vid=1&pid=772034&scid=772034032
It also comes in a better grey that I don't see anymore online. They were 50% off, so $17! Soooo soft and cozy. I'm going to wear it with a lace camin underneath. I bought grey and oatmeal. They come down past my behind.

Leggings http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=59985&vid=1&pid=772063&scid=772063012
These are nice and thick quality. I did have to size up in them. I normally wear a Med. but a Large fit perfect.

And I really like these skinny jeans:
http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=781348022&userSearchText=sweetheart+skinny+jeans&searchCID=26519

I said I wouldn't buy any of these styles, because I didn't think my body looked good enough for them...but I was pleasantly surprised once I tried them all on :)

Now maybe I can ask you all, which boots would look good with that sweater and leggings combo? Something under $100 please :)

And yeah, as my mother always says, it's too bad I didn't save my entire wardrobe growing up, it always comes back as the latest new style!

I so remember the leggings, stirrup pants, and long sweaters, tall boots look in high school.

Oh well, it kind of makes me feel "hip" again :rotflmao:.

I love that first dress too...and since I live somewhere where the winters do not get very cold, I am always excited to find "fall/winter" clothes that I can actually wear in Florida. I love the idea of cozy sweaters, but anything too warm ends up spending most of the winter on mothballs waiting for a trip up north.

I'm also digging this dress, but wonder if it will be to warm for me here.

Here's a blog link you might find helpful: http://www.alreadypretty.com/2010/09/reader-request-how-to-wear-leggings.html

and this (but these are spring/summer so no boots): http://youlookfab.com/2009/07/01/ylf-forum-members-master-leggings/

I've become a reader of fashion blogs-- not because I am fashionable, quite the opposite in fact, but I'm trying to dress better. The leggings look is tricky on my body type so I haven't tried it yet, but my understanding is that leggings look good with skirts/dresses that are a little shorter than you'd otherwise wear, but the top should *definitely* cover your butt. It seems like a very comfy/practical look too.

Thank you, I'll check out the blogs. I'm not a huge blog reader, and never thought to read fashion blogs.

ETA: Really like the first blog (haven't gotten to the 2nd). She has great tutorials on tucking in boots, pant length, etc.

I am wearing my Spanx leggings now, with tall boots and a short sleeved sweater dress, a little longer than the one pictured, but I agree with PP that unless you are tall like the model, it will be a lot longer on you. I have belted the dress today (wide belt), but have gone without as well. I'm not at all skinny, but I think this is a pretty good look for me.

If you look at the blogs posted, the first one has some *great* examples of long sweaters/dresses/skirts with leggings. They keep saying that the are *not* pants, like they were worn in the 80's.
