Also, I bought some items and received Kohl's cash. How is the Kohl's cash handled if I return some of the items? Do I lose a portion of the cash depending on how much I return?

Yes, you lose the Kohl's cash. So if you return a $10 item which drops you below the threshold to earn the cash, you end up getting nothing back. At least that has been my experience.

What's the threshold?

You get $10 for each $50 purchase so if you spent $75 and only returned $10 then you'd still be eligible for the KC because you haven't dropped below that $50 threshold. If you take store credit instead of a refund, however, then you can keep the KC regardless.
