My ds is in 1st grade and is learning to read. He is doing pretty well and has beginning to read books that come home every week from school.

My question is have you found any books thar are characters like star wars etc that work for boys but are easy for first readers. All the ones I find are too hard for beginners. Thanks!

Check the easy reader section at the library. You can find books that have just a word or two on a page all the way to simple "chapter books."

Look at DK's early leveled readers, like this:

The one that is a level 4 it might be too difficult but they have levels 1-4 IIRC. Here's some others at different levels:

http://www.amazon.com/Starry-Sky-READERS-Kate-Hayden/dp/0756619599/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1288024801&sr=1-8

There are other topics too. I remember DS1 having one about Lego stuff from DK, for example.

The library will have a shelf of early reader books at different levels and I'm sure a librarian can help you find something at an appropriate level.

eta: it has been a while since i"ve looked at the DK readers and after looking at the inside of a few on Amazon, I think they are way more advanced than what you are looking for. I have our early readers packed up for our next move and I can't recall which ones we have that DS1 enjoyed, or I would look for you.

wonder if any of these would work:
"pre level 1" but I can't access the inside look feature so I don't know what the difficulty level is:

I haven't found a Star Wars easy reader that was a true level 1, however there are many level 1 books that DS has enjoyed - especially the Tiny and Noodles series.

also have you looked at the Step Into Reading books? They have different stages.
