just curious. I used to listen when I lived in Norcal because we only had two public radio station (both linked to the local universities; one was NPR, the other was 100% public, and student run). Now the :bag goes over my head because I don't know the call numbers of the local station(s). I know I should find it, but honestly the one time I have to listen to adult non music radio is my drive time and I prefer the light heartedness of the Mark & Brian Radio show (http://www.markandbrian.com/sectional.asp?id=16121) in the AM hours, and in the PM I like The Mason & Ireland sports show (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/radio/show?showId=masonireland) or the crazy "we dislike everyone conservative or liberal, and govt. employees" Jon & Ken show (http://www.kfiam640.com/pages/jk2010.html). People don't understand why I like Jon & Ken as I am a govt. employee, but sometimes they just hit the nail on the head about govt. employees and it makes me laugh out loud.

Hell's yes.

Love all THREE of my public radio stations. Commercial radio and TV news grate on me (not the politics, the fluff pieces and the gawdawful commercials) like nothing else known to humankind. :waving4:

Absolutely. It's the only radio station I listen to for news and entertainment (I'm thinking of you, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me! :heartbeat:). We listen to it mostly in the car but sometimes at home as well. We've been freeloading too long :bag and need to make a pledge to our local station, especially in light of the potential reductions they might face in the wake of this controversy. I think it's an excellent news outlet with very high quality reporting.

Love it--but I am limited with the kids around. I can't listen to the news with them (sometimes DS2 but he is starting to listen carefully and pick things up...) there is just too much adult content (suicide bombings for example) that is inappropriate for little ears.

But other shows--Car Talk, Science Friday, etc. are fine for the kiddos imo.

Yep, every day. I do admit that I am a big fan of one of the morning DJs where I live so I have been listening to a bit less NPR in the morning. But, I always listen in the evening if I am out and about.

My parents always listened to it and I found it so boring. Oh, how times have changed. :)

Car Talk rocks, btw. Regardless of your political leanings I recommend listening to that one. I download the podcasts and look forward to them each week.

So what shows are everyone's favorites? The ones I listen to the most are Morning Edition and All Things Considered or Market Place because that's what's on during my commute, but I love so many of them (here's looking at you Ira Glass).

The only show I can't seem to really love, though I've tried, is Prairie Home Companion. I love Garrison Keillor's voice, but I guess you just can't make a Midwesterner out of me.

I listen during my commute, when I'm working at my desk and in my kitchen.
I started listening in grad school when my hippie lab mate introduced me to Talk of the Nation with Juan Williams.
We actually have a number of NPR employees who live in our little town.

Most of my shows are not NPR distributed. But I like the NPR ones like Talk of the Nation and Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Car Talk, Wait Wait, This American Life, Marketplace are all faves of mine which are distributed by others, like Chicago Public Radio.

My favorite on Public Radio these days is RADIO LAB. Simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Check it out. Tons of culture and science stuff. So wonderful.

I also love the music show that plays on my main NPR affiliate station called American Roots.

LA Theater Work's The Plays the Thing runs at 10PM Fridays here and often is our date night in thing after the kids go to bed. How geeky is that?

Most of this content on the shows above like Radio Lab has NOTHING partisan political and my conservative friends enjoy and support it too.

I love ME and ATC, but don't get to listen to them all that much, because I'm not in the car then. I love marketplace money on the weekends. Car talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell me too. And This American Life. I really love the Kojo Nnamdi Show (that's local) and Tell Me More, but I'm never in the car when it's on.

I really don't like Science Friday. Which is odd because I'm a science geek. Prairie Home Companion is good sometimes, but other times I can't stand it. Love their joke show though!

98.3 KPCC is NPR in LA.

And now being in No. Cal I do miss the "junk talk radio" we used to have in So. Cal. However, I am really learning a lot about the upcoming election since all I have is NPR or KCBS. LOL.

I find some of it uproariously funny. And then there is the music...well...notsomuch. It used to be on during my weekend drive to work and I'd even sit in the parking lot listening for as long as possible.

I listen to Diane Rehm online in the morning because my local affiliate doesn't carry it. Radio Times, Talk of the Nation, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and DS1 LOVES car talk and Science Fridays. He has Car Talk podcasts and listens to them over and over LOL.

I sometimes listen to BBC news hour in the morning too. I don't listen to all of those daily by any stretch but if I am driving it is usually NPR in my car, and I usually catch *some* form of NPR in the radio. I love it when the kids play outside while I'm prepping dinner and I can listen in peace for a bit ;)

eta: I rarely watch TV news ever, so NPR is a big part of how I get my news.

It's the only radio station I listen to for news and entertainment (I'm thinking of you, Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me! :heartbeat:).

That is my NPR production engineer friend's favorite show.

Of the four stations in my area only one has WWDTM on their programing list at 11 am on Saturday (not sure if that is the normal time it's on) so kind of a hard time, but I'll try to listen to it next Saturday if I am out running errands or folding clothes at home.

When I did listen in Norcal I liked All Things Considered, and Car Talk.

At home I get most if not all national news from BBC America. I might watch NBC every so often, but it's usually kid tv during that time.

I will try listening to NPR this afternoon before I leave work on my computer.

10-25-2010, 03:29 PM
Love it, but I have to be careful what I listen to. Marketplace is my favorite show and Talk of the Nation is generally safe for little ears. And we podcast Left Right on Center now that we've moved out of LA.

See, and I don't like Kojo (I'm DC too) or Diane Rehm for that matter actually. Science Friday I could take or leave depending on the subject. I love Wait Wait and What Do You Know? Love Car Talk. Love This American Life. Heck, I even totally enjoy The Splendid Table. And for the short segments, Story Corps is incredible I LOVE it. and I adore The Writers' Almanac.

Yep, I found that one. :)

If you still want junk radio Jon & Ken are on in San Francisco, but I can't remember the station name or numbers. If you can not take them seriously they are quite comical, but if you take politics seriously or lean towards the left more than a bit you'll most likely hate them. I am a centrist. Vote for whoever the he$$ I feel like voting for in regards to each particular matter. Mark & Brian are on 96.9 The Eagle out of Sacramento from 7 am to 10 am.

Oddly, I don't listen to it as much now that I am working. I mainly listen to the local traffic and weather station during my commute home to catch accidents so that I can alter my route.

But my favs are Morning Edition and All Things Considered, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Car Talk.

I like Kojo Nmamdi (sp?) but I don't always care to listen to his guests. Same for Diane Rehm.

I like Fresh Air sometimes, but sometimes the topics and guests annoy me. I hate TOTN because I hate call in shows. I :love5: Science Friday, but I often tune away when there are callers.

No, no! You aren't a jerkface! I originally had the same thoughts years ago and I got my parents listening to her (during the leadup to the 08 elections) and they felt the same way until they found out what she is dealing with.

I haven't listened as much in the last year or so, but I am rarely bothered by the speed or quality of her voice now because I'm used to it. When I first started listening though I remember thinking why does she speak so. slowly.????

I admire her for doing what she does with such challenging personal circumstances. She gets voice treatments periodically and will be off the air for a few days every few months when she has her treatment.

Of the four stations in my area ...

.

Four?! 4?! Hurray :) I just know two-- KPCC (89.3 out of Pasadena) and KCRW (89.9 out of Santa Monica). Where are the others? That would totally expand my repetoire!!

I'm generally a KPCC gal, but my DH will listen to 89.9 more often. KPCC has no music, KCRW has their music shows, like Morning Becomes Eclectic.

Depending on your timing, they may have the same shows on like Morning Edition. Come 9:00 a.m., you have musc on KCRW and the Madeline Brand show (used to be BBC for a bit, and another national show before that).

KPCC has Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Car Talk on Saturday mornings. I think only KPCC has Prairie Home Companion, although I hate that show, so I would be changing it on KCRW without registering, I"m sure.

Yes!!!!

When the kids are in the car, they typically get their CDs. But whenever it is just me (and usually baby), I do NPR. DH's is a total NPR addict.

I also listen to Dave Ramsey on the conservative talk radio station in town. The difference in the news reporting even just the "on the hour" clips between the two stations is amazing.

Honestly, I have not, because I always end up back with Liberal Radio during the times I'm in the car. That's Stephanie Miller in the morning and Ed Schultz in the early afternoon, and formerly Ron Reagan now Norman Goldman after 5pm. But I can't stand Thom Hartmann, and he's on between Big Ed and NorMAN, and I'm going to start listening to NPR during that time. I wish I could listen at work, but the truth is that i've never done well listening to ANYTHIGN while I work. Not music, not talk radio, not television on the radio, NOTHING. I can't multitask that. But I want to listen more. It's a start.

I only listen to talk radio when I'm in the car (I prefer Radio 2 at home- that's the CBC music channel for you Americans) and I certainly don't listen as much as I did when I lived in the US, but we always catch "Wait, Wait", and "Car Talk" on Saturdays on our drives to go skiing in the winter :) I will occasionally tune into "All things considered" if I don't like what the CBC (Radio 1) is discussing during my weekday drive as well ;)

I grew up listening to NPR. My dad had the complete box set of Prairie Home Companion (on cassette) and played it often...probably still does; yes, I'm from the Midwest :D

I started listening to it a few years ago when I had a really long commute and the local pop station I was listening to (KOST 103.5!) had too much celeb news. I loved it, never knew I could get that much news that wasn't local. At the time we left SoCal my favorite show was Left Right and Center  I really miss that show. In the last year, I've discovered The Exchange (local show), Car Talk, and Diane Rehm.

ETA: Gracemom, I just heard the episode of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me with Dick Van **** this weekend! He sang the words to his song, and it was very sweet. It did take me a while to understand what this show was about, but now I love it!

LOVE IT! My fav shows are probably Talk of the Nation (although I think Ray Suarez was the absolute best host ever), This American Life, Wait Wait don't Tell Me, Car Talk, Marketplace Money, and Splendid Table. I will listen to just about anything on NPR, but not A Prairie Home Companion. I am from Minnesota, grew up with two of Garrison Keillor's stepkids, but I can NOT listen to his show.

I have supported NPR and local public radio off and on over the years, starting in Seattle, and branching out to OPB, and MPR.
