Open it up and take a look. if there is mold, toss it.

Take a sniff. If it smells off, toss it

Take a tiny taste -- if it tastes alcoholic, toss it

Otherwise. it is probably okay :)

I just recently polished off about 2 tablespoons of applesauce remaining in a jar I had opened at least 2 months ago (possibly more :bag) and it was fine.

I'd toss. Otherwise I'd be thinking the little black specks were mold.
