I have NICE coats for say when we go out to a show (not that we do that but if we DO I have the right coat). I need an every day more sporty coat with a hood that is waterproof. I wear my 15 year old snowboarding jacket which might need to be replaced ,,,
TIA

I need one too. I have several nicer coats, nothing more casual. I'm considering a toggle coat? I also found a coat by Marmot? from TJ max. Black, hip length, big fur lined hood. I haven't taken the tags off yet b/c I'm concerned it might not be warm enough. It's nylon on the outside and lined if fleece. No thinsulate or other insulation as far as I can tell. I do need something thinner though, b/c I cannot carry around the kid's coat and be lugging around a big down thing for myself.

Last year I got a parka from LE. It's been really terrific. I wear it exclusively in the winter under 40 degrees. It's my day to day coat. It's really warm. I also have a pea coat that isn't really warm, so I wear it until it gets to about 40 during the day for a few days (then I switch to the heavier coat). The LE coat is my fav by far of winter coats I've had over the last 15 years.

Lands End down coats are nice looking and comfortable. If you want something a bit nicer, I love Max Mara casual coats.

I really like the Land's End jackets and coats. They have all different weather ratings, some jackets are waterproof, some not, most are machine washable (which is important with kids) and best of all the quality is really great. I've just been really pleased with the ones i've owned.

I got these 2 this season since I needed a really good waterproof jacket and everyday, warm jacket for picking up kids from school. Haven't worn the down jacket yet (although I'm excited too, I LOVE it), but I've been wearing the lighterweight one all fall and love it too.

Really like that down parka in gray, Lisa.

I love my land's end coat. It keeps me so warm and it's very lightweight which is huge when carrying a child. I got mine a yr or two ago, looks like it's the equivalent of their hooded squall jacket.

Lisa will the parka (which looks awesome) be ok for someone who is on the tall side -- 5'10?
Thanks!

Not Lisa, LOL, but I have a LE jacket really similar to that (it's a tiny bit different b/c it's from a couple of years ago but looks to be the same length), and I'm tall-ish (a smidge over 5'8) and I think it would definitely work for someone a bit taller even. It's a great coat, very warm and comfy, but not ridiculously bulky.

I love my North Face Arctic Parka. Got it from Cabela's on super sale. I'm not tall, but I like a winter coat that is made for a taller person so I can pull my hands in the sleeves, lol. It's really wonderful.

I like that it looks stylish, comes down to my knees, has a tough exterior and that it's really SUPER functional.

I second the North Face recommendation though I have this one (http://www.thenorthface.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=46880&storeId=207&catalogId=10201&langId=-1&from=subCat&parent_category_rn=11719&variationId=L32)
I've had it for a few years now and it still looks great. It can be machine washed and is nice and warm, but still light and packable...

I am also a big North Face fan.

I have one very similar to this from last year, in black

I also just use my simple classic black or camel wool/cashmere coat if I want to be a little more dressed up.

I grew up in upstate NY and have always been a Columbia girl. Maybe cause I was always a skier?

I have the short version in white and the mid version in black, look brand new after several years.

I also love my hooded squall jacket from LE.

I've been wanting a hooded squall for several years but my old Columbia jacket just won't wear out.

I picked up one of these LE polarthins for $12 on clearance at Sears last year. It's great (except for not having a hood), surprisingly warm for how thin it is. http://www.landsend.com/pp/PolarthinInsulatorJacket~198943_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::IRI&CM_MERCH=IDX_00002__0000000142

I love my insulated squall for when its really cold.

I too am looking for a down parka like the Lands End Luxe Down in gray. Looks like the Land's End parka is sold out in the smaller sizes, even in petite. I am looking for something similar to this in both style and color. I don't like the metallic look. Any other suggestions?

I have the LE Chalet coat (http://www.landsend.com/pp/DownChaletLongCoat~148651_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::PEU&CM_MERCH=IDX_00007__0000001046&origin=index) I'm 5'9" and its a nice length for me. Its like a sleeping bag, so cozy. People always compliment me on it and my boss actually had her kids give her one for Christmas last year she liked it so much.

:rotflmao: That is a walking sleeping bag! Perfect for your weather though.

My strategy is to use my old coat this year and stalk the LE clearance at Sears. Last year they were so, so cheap (like $35 for a parka).
