I'm in LOVE with this coat:

But not the price. :( I really like the fit and the fabric in person is really eyecatching.

I was thinking more along the $30-$50 range.

I need something to wear when it's 20-40ish degrees.

So tell me about your fav peacoat/trench and what color? I was thinking I maybe could get away with something a little fun and bold if it covered most of the shirt I was wearing under it. Or do I want neutral and dress it up with scarves? I'm a transplanted floridian so coats are a foreign language to me (up until a few years ago my winter coat was denim :bag )

Not sure this is heavy enough and it is pricier that 50 but very pretty...

Kristac, is there an H&M close to where you are? They have EXACTLY what you are looking for in that price range..

I almost got this. I have never shopped here before so I cannot comment on the quality, but the feel I got was sort of Old Navy like. Semi "disposable" womens clothes great for seasonal/trendy clothing.

OK ETA: Not sure where you are living, but if this is your main "winter" coat, then, yeah, I'd go neutral and get some fun scarves. Once you have that, then you can get the more fun ones. I have a grey 3/4 length classic grey wool coat, a full length length black wool coat, a short down coat, just got a 3/4 length down coat (waiting for it to arrive, I'm so excited, I get so cold here in Chicago) - all of these are in pretty neutral solids so they last for years (the black wool coat is 12 years old and you'd never know it). I've had some trendy fun ones in the past that are now out of style, but I didn't spend much on them and they are out of style now so this was one I considered to spice things up. The one I linked to is a fun 30 degree plus addition I may get if my size is still around when it goes on sale. As a FL transplant, you want to get something with some weight to it - it should feel heavy when you pick it up so that it keeps you warm (unless it's down). Otherwise, make sure the tags say "lightweight, WINTER coat" or has a temp rating. There are some very toasty coats that don't weigh a lot, but make sure they are rated for the temp you want. I find people who visit who aren't used to the cold need coats "rated" a good 10 degrees colder than whatever the temp is... when you live in a cold climate for a while you will eventually get used to it (well, sorta). You don't want to kick yourself that first 25 degree day for not having a warmer coat - I'd invest some decent money in at least one that you know will last and keep you warm.

You cant go wrong with black, grey or camel to start.

my favorite peacoat is one i got like 5 years ago from J.Crew. It is basically identical to this
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/outerwear/wool/PRDOVR~18263/18263.jsp

it's way more than $50, but it's the only stylish-looking coat (e.g. not a ski jacket or a puffer jacket) i could find that would keep me warm enough for the Boston winters (i am from California, and a waist-length coat wouldn't cut it for me :)). i got the coat with the Thinsulate which really made a difference. I was a grad student at the time and for sure did not pay retail for it (remember i got it on a mega-sale, maybe around $150?)

i also have an old navy coat that i like and use often, very similar to this one, but for me it wasn't warm enough to wear when it was 20degrees or so.
