gift for 5 yo boy? (who I don't know)

It finally happened... The girls have their first party invite from someone I don't know. :) A boy at the school they just started is having a party. The girls tell me they aren't even sure who he is (not sure I believe them because it is a small class, but they have only been there 1 week).

So I need safe ideas for a 5 year old boy when I have no clue about interests or what parents allow. I am thinking a board game and a book maybe? Stomp rockets are a possibility. I prefer to let each girl give a toy (about $10 each), but we can do combo gifts.

Some of the easier Lego kits - look for the small ones with under 100 pc and starting ages around 5 or 6 yrs.

Legos are good because if he doesn't have them yet he's deprived (LOL) and even if he has a bunch you can ALWAYS use more legos.
