DS1 just vomited all over our down comforter. The label says dry clean only. Has anyone ever washed a down comforter in a washing machine or should I wait till tomorrow to take it to the dry cleaner?

Blech!

OK to wash if you have a front loader or high efficiency, otherwise take it to the dry cleaners. Oh and you can dry it on low heat - use tennis balls.

Unfortunately, I've washed ours multiple times because of one of the girls or the cat:ROTFLMAO:

There are times that we've lost some feathers due to a hole that I didn't know about, and it takes forever to dry, but otherwise, it comes out okay.

Good luck!

Oh no! I agree that you can wash it in a front loader. Actually my mom used to wash ours when we were kids in top loaders...but that was the 80's ;)

Hope your DS1 feels better!

Our housekeeper accidentally washed our down comforter a few weeks ago in our front loader (she didn't know it was dry clean only) and it came out OK, looks and feels the same as it did before. We mostly let it air dry and when it was slightly damp we put it in the dryer on low with a couple of dryer balls.

I do it every few months, for years noew! And I used to do it in the top loader! As long as there are no holes in it, it will be fine. It will take almost 3 dryer cycles to dry, though :)

I have washed mine in a front load heavy duty commercial washer at the laundromat. I wouldn't risk putting it in your home washer as it could overload it.

I wash all of our down comforters in the front loader....and then dry on medium and it's fine.

Thanks. I have a top loader washing machine though. Yay or nay?

I'd take it down to a laundromat then. One with the front loading ones.

I have done ours in both front and top and haven't had any problems. Pre treat before and then wash. We have had cat pee and baby puke on ours and have removed any trace of it.

Oddly enough, a realtor was just telling me yesterday about getting vomit out of a down comforter. He said he used woolite and then put those orange cones in the drier to break up the feathers because he didn't have the tennis balls. He said he googled down comfortor and vomit and it told him how to do it. He said it came out like new.

I have and it comes out just fine. Takes forever to dry though.

I have washed all 3 of ours in our front loader. I think only one of them claims to be machine washable. I haven't had any problems.

Oh, I forgot to add - you have to be nearby, to catch if it makes your washer "unbalanced". But yes, top loader should be fine.... at least, it has been for me, many times.

Hope your DS is okay. Sounds like you CAN wash it, but next time you order one, The Company Store has "machine washable" down comforters. If they say it is okay, it makes me feel better, kwim?

We wash our king size comforter in our HE frontloader. Extra rinse, extra spin and then about a year in the dryer with 3-4 tennis balls. It comes out perfectly!

Do not forget the (clean) tennis balls or several dryer balls. They help re-fluff the feathers and separate everything so they dry correctly.

Thanks everyone. I washed it in gentle cycle, put it through the dryer twice (we don't have tennis balls) and now I am letting it air dry bit more. Seems to have turned out ok!
