Do you have the small simple Thomas the Tank Engine toy that is battery powered, goes around wooden train tracks? Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Friends-Wooden-Railway-Battery-Powered/dp/B0000630L2
If so, how many cars can you attach to it and have it work? I am wondering if the magnetic link or the battery power is not strong enough for more than one or two cars (or maybe it can't pull any cars at all).

Also, it's my understanding that the grooves on the official Thomas tracks enable the battery train to go. What happens if you have mix-and-match tracks, some official Thomas with grooves and some anoher brand without? Will the battery-powered train hve enough power to go over a piece or two of the wrong track?

IMO it's quite strong and will pull lots of cars. It has a little trouble going up hills if there are lots of cars attached, or if not using "official" Thomas tracks with the ridges in the grooves. For the most part, it works pretty well. DS loved the battery powered engine for a while, but now mostly likes to play with the kid-powered engines.
