I pulled a tag for a 6 year old boy that needs a winter jacket.

It gets very cold here where we live, so I want to find a nice and warm jacket for the little boy.

Any good deals out there?

Consignment store!! I was just at my local store and they had North Face, Columbia and LL Bean jackets there at very reasonable prices.

I picked up a really nice winter coat for my nephew at Macy's last week. They had a whole rack that was marked "Special Purchase" and all the coats on it were $19.99.

There are tons of normal priced jackets, of course, but these look like the options in the clearance in roughly a size 6.

LandsEnd makes great coats for a good price. My 6yo is a size 7 (have they given you a size?), but if I were buying him a coat right now I'd buy an 8 so he could wear it next year too.

Last year on Black Friday I got some great deals on winter coats/hats/gloves at Old Navy. I bought 2 for and Adopt a Family situation.

Thanks everyone! The boy is six and the mom said a size medium jacket. So, I am thinking Size 7 or 8. I am finding the medium size a bit confusing, because a medium is different from store to store.

This squall one looks good

I am thinking a size small in Lands End sizing.

Or this Old Navy Jacket in a size Medium. It seems to get very good reviews?

I braved Old Navy last Black Friday. I wasn't looking for coats, though. Hmm? Do you think they will have good deals on their coats again? I don't have to return the gift until December 9th.

I think that was the Old Navy one I bought last year. I think it was about 1/2 price Black Friday or that weekend, IIRC I ordered on-line and paid about $22.50 for the coat. It was a door buster and I had some sort of coupon.

I thought it was a very nice coat and would have my own child wear something similar. We were buying a bunch of gifts for the whole family so it was nice to find a great price.

You could probably also go with a L in the "little boys" sizing.

If it's very cold where you live, I would *definitely* go with the parka length rather than the jacket length. We have the Squall Parka (on the third one), and it's great. But the few inches of extra length in colder weather is great.

We cross-posted....I'm now remembering that I bought the coats before BF with a coupon and returned it and rebought on-line on BF...you could do the same so you are certain you get the size you need. Buy one now and shop around for a better deal if you have time?

I am leaning toward the Old Navy one. From the reviews it looks warm enough. Someone from Chicago posted it held up to winters there. Our winters are similar here where I live. I might stop and take a look at them.

I might buy one for a back up coat for my DS. DS still fits in his coats, but I wouldn't mind having one in the next size up in case he hits a growth spurt. DS trashes the coats he wear to school, since they play outside several times a day in snowpants and jackets as long as the windchill doesn't dip down too low.

I may be at ON on Black Friday. LOL.

Hmm maybe I will print out the coupons and check out Old Navy and our Lands End Inlet on the way in.

From what I remember of the Squall jacket I had for my DS it was cut kind of narrow. I don't know if the boy's mom is asking for a medium jacket to up-size and get more life out of the jacket or asking for a medium because the boy is just tall or because he is husky. I don't want to buy a jacket that is real narrow. It makes it difficult to layer underneath.

Are the big Kid squalls narrow? DS's 2T toddler one sure was narrow.

DD had a squall jacket last year. I didn't think it was cut narrow but it was on the shorter side. We used it in the car, but had a warmer jacket for playing in the snow. We Adopted-a-family, and they asked for a coat and gloves for the 5-year old boy. I got a really nice one at costco. It feels thicker than the Squall, and is longer. I believe it was about $24. Costco also had really nice, thick gloves for kids for $10.

I have found that my adopt-a-families always ask for things that seem very big to me. But I realize that if they are asking for a winter coat in Nov/Dec around here, then it is probably for the next year or to size up or grow into or whatever.

I have had really good luck getting coats (they seem to always be on the list for each of the kids) at Old Navy and one year Wal-Mart had some decent coats for dirt cheap on Black Friday. Also, Gymboree sometimes marks down a few coats really cheap on Black Friday and then there is usually the 30% off the whole store plus a 20% off coupon. I have gotten great deals doing that too.

I just got a mailer from ON to say they are open on Thanksgiving for Gap/BR card holders and BF deals would be available on Thursday. YMMV as I think last year the store near me was not allowed to open Thanksgiving Day. No word on the deals in this mailer though :(

I just got back from Costco. They had some nice winter jackets for kids for not too much money.

Costco. They have great prices on really nice quality coats.

Wherever you shop, you should look for a 3-in-1 coat that has the separate liner so they can get three seasons of wear out of it.

Just got back from hitting Aldi for some milk (2.19 and hormone-free, yay) and bananas and saw toddler coats for 12.99 (their regular price). If you are interested, you should check them out soon since they don't restock "special purchase" items. The "boy" ones were green and navy and a little puffy and something I'd put my own DC in.
