Books, bedroom decor that is a little less babyish, playroom furniture ie children's table and chairs set, anywhere chair from pbk, clothing, outdoor children's rocking chair - my parents got one for DS1 from Cracker Barrel and the boys love it. That's all I can think of at the moment.
Savings bonds are a common 1st birthday gift in our families.

Not that you can exactly suggest something so specific but I like to give a PBK monogram beach towel for a first birthday gift.
How about cup/plate sets, kushies bibs, art smock? - things you might need anyway
like pp mentioned.........passes or gift certificates to zoo, museum, gymboree, or other kid classes of some kind.
Somone suggested this to me for DD, who has a birthday in Feb.

My IL's got DD1 a subscription to Babybug Magazine for her 1st b-day. She still loves it!

I totally agree with books.
Also, if he likes music or singing, how about CDs.

my cousin got dd a set of hand and foot molds so we could make impressions of her first christmas.
membership to museums, pbk anywhere chair, learning tower, and contribution to a 529 are all wonderful.
