DH has a half brother who's 11 and a sister who's 12. What do kids this age play with or want? BIL has Aspergers and is very functional but seems to be in things much younger than I would imagine for his age. He is a kittle "out there" but once you get his attention he's fine. SIL is very intelligent for her age and is already reading 300 page books. I asked for lists and didn't get a whole lot of response. The few items I did get seemed very age inappropriate. I'll probably get at least one item they specifically asked for but would like to get them a "surprise" as well that may be something theirs peers have or is more age appropriate. They are socially immature for their age because they never really get much exposure to other kids their age. FIL doesn't have the patience to let them be kids and have friends over, etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

What types of things did they ask for?

I would caution you about making assumptions and giving gifts based on what you think they should be into at that age. There is a wide range of where kids are developmentally at that age. Some 11/12 year olds are really into older things. But some are not and that is OK too.

:yeahthat:

My son is only 6, but he too has Asperger's and tends to like to play with things that are "too young" for him. (He does have a 2-year-old sister, which contributes to that.) But he also is interested in things well beyond his chronological age, especially science. I think this type of span is typical for people with Asperger's. They like what they like.

I guess this post must have come across the wrong way. I am planning on getting them one or two gifts from their lists, I just wanted to get them an additional gift each and wasn't sure what to get them as they don't have more than a couple toys and the only games they have are what I have bought them in the past. I just wanted to get them something that would help keep them away from TV as they watch WAY too much and wanted to get them something kids their age would like.

How about a board game like Blokus that they can play together? Or a puzzle?

I'm also curious as to what items were on their list that seem age inappropriate.

Here are two of the three things SIL wanted, who will be 13 next week:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3455093

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4023447

Here's are BIL's items:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4413354

I don't know, I guess I just thought they would like something a little more intriguing. The only way they even came up with their lists (which were shorter than I had hoped) was to look at TRU.com because they don't really go anywhere to get any ideas except from TV. Any help would be appreciated or if you think just these things are enough that's fine, I won't get anymore.

My 9 yo DS has Asperger's too. Typically, kids with Asperger's have obsessions. My DS loves trains, trucks, airplanes and Legos. It's actually quite easy to shop for him! I saw what your BIL suggested. My DS would not mind playing with that Toy Story garbage truck either LOL.

How about this Lego Toy Story garbage truck: http://shop.lego.com/product/?p=7599&LangId=2057&ShipTo=US ? It's for ages 6-12.

Thank you!! I think that would be perfect! He does love SpongeBob as one of his obsessions so I try to get something that has SpongeBob on it. I've found a few games I think will work in addition to the stuffed animal.
