Does this have 3G and wi-fi or just wi-fi?

Does this have 3G and wi-fi or just wi-fi?

Website says: "It won’t be the newest model; rather, it will be the second-generation Kindle, which has worse contrast and no built-in WiFi. The sale begins noon EST on Friday. The current generation Kindle, with better “e ink” and WiFi, sells for $139."

I have no idea what that means (how they're describing it) but sounds like maybe not such a BF deal as a marked down price on their old unsold models. I might sit this one out even though it sounded great at first!

If this is the one I have, which I believe is the 2nd generation one (got it last year at this time for $249), it has built in 3g, so you don't need wi-fi. Built in 3g is actually BETTER, because you can connect anywhere for free, you don't need to worry about wifi. And the contrast is just fine IMO. I think $89 is an awesome deal. I'm considering buying one for DH! :)

I'm interested in this but really have to do some more research I guess before Friday. I've read extreme opposite reviews on this-makes it tough to decide!

it's a great deal for the last generation kindle! i had one & got a new one recently, so my old one will go to sis-in-law for christmas - our family doesn't mind hand-me-downs. anyway, i'd gladly spend $89 for one if i was in the market.

I'm kind of interested in this, but am a newbie to the e-readers. Could anyone post a link to the actual kindle that will be FS? I would like to check out the specs.

Me too please! I want to get a Kindle for my inlaws. If I could see the amazon link to the product, I could make up my mind on whether to get this one or not.

This is the link from the ad site:

I have it, and love it. It's not obsolete AT ALL. I've never even used everything that it has..... I just read. And I have read SO MANY books, thanks to this. It has (and will continue to) totally replaced books for me. Much easier, smaller, and I can read it anywhere. Love. I'm going to try and get one for my mom....

Thanks so much for this thread! My mom just said last night that she'd like a Kindle for Christmas, so I'm going to try to snatch one up here. :yay:

To answer some of the questions:

* Yes, it's the older model. Am guessing they will sell existing inventory and stop when its gone.

* No, it doesn't have wifi, but does have 3G. In the current models, the one with wifi is $139 and the one with wifi and 3g is $189. Having 3G is actually better than wifi - you have the ability to download books anywhere you can use a cell phone. And no, you don't have to pay a monthly contract and/or fee to download using 3G.

* The e-ink used is slightly older technology, but still has great contrast, is readable in bright light, is *not* LED/LCD (which is much more tiring to the eyes to read), can be made different sizes/fonts, etc.

* It is *slightly* (very slightly) bigger than the latest model.

* It has slightly shorter battery life than the current model - but with the 3G off (which it can by other than when downloading books or syncing to another device like an iphone, Android phone, PC, Mac etc so you can read it there) it easily lasts a week, if not longer.

My take? If you must have the latest/newest just because you like having the latest/newest, I wouldn't get this one. (Not a value judgment - just a statement.) If you want a version that's really good, works well, etc etc for a value price, then this one is.

I continue to think they'll sell out VERY quickly - so I'd be ready to buy as soon as they're listed.

Thank you for the product link and for the answers to the various questions that were asked! Very helpful info. I do have a question about the 3G and web browsing... in the product description, it says this Kindle is equipped with a basic web browser. Does anyone use this? Is it any good? A big draw for me would be the ability to check email and some other web sites/blogs that I like to read.

The web browser is very very basic. I've used it to check email, look up things in a pinch. But, given the choice, I'd rather use my laptop of iPhone for web stuff.

But, yes it's definitely doable. And amazon pays for your 3G access (unlike Verizon for my iPhone) which makes having 3G on the Kindle even nicer.

Does this version or a newer model have lighting so it can be used in the dark? TIA

karstmama

no, none of them are lit. you can get several types of little lamps, though, and a few of the covers have lights or room for lights.

And the nice thing about this version is that you can get covers for a steal :)
I :heartbeat: mine - got it as a holiday gift last year and it was the BEST GIFT EVER!!! Especially if you are traveling with little ones :)

Agree with PPs, this will sell out FAST!

How can I be ready for this? What will the link to the actual deal be? Will it be a Lightening Deal, or will it just show up at that price at the link that was posted earlier?

pjsmom30

Also, will these be refurbished, or new?

And does anyone how the text to voice feature works and what the voice sounds like. This would be a feature I could see my son and I using a lot.

And any advice for actualy getting one when they go on sale on Amazon would be great too. I don't buy much from Amazon.

Thanks, Jessica.

Nice, thanks for letting us know! That's one advantage to being up overnight and early in the a.m. with a new baby, I can go online and hopefully get one. :)

It's listed as a lightning deal. Go to the Black Friday link and look in the drop down list for Kindle store.

So, the bfads.net says the sale begins at 9am PST... the Amazon deals home page says 9am PST, but the actual Kindle page says 9pm PST.... :irked: ........

I got one! I have crappy internet service (not dial up but not high speed either) and I had three windows open - when it went live I clicked "add to cart" on all three one at a time and the second one went through. I have no idea about the technology or logic behind all of it, as my MIL who is on super high speed internet couldn't get one either. I've missed out on other lightning deals (many not nearly as "hot" as this one too) so far this year though so I had low hopes for this one. I guess it was just luck!

Just clicked "join waitlist" and it worked. Now what? I guess I will wait and see what happens.

Ditto. I was locked and loaded and clicked "add to cart" AS SOON AS the price changed at exactly 12:00 EST. Sold out. It wasn't even 12:01.

I did not even bother. Chances of getting one were pretty low. I would have loved to get one at this price as a gift for DH but the price was to good and everybody and their mother/DH wanted one.

For what its worth, my mom said that people were saying at work there was a glitch and somebody got to buy a huge quantity of the Kindles. I wasnt there for the conversation but I dont see how thats possible. My mom is not always the most accurate story re-teller. :6:
