I see there are lots of sets, but can you buy just extra track pieces? Any good deals out there?

Yes, you can buy track packs- just sets, no individual tracks, iirc. There are some sets that are great starter sets and would be fun as is. Check Ebay for deals too. We love our Geotrax. Our set is 6.5yo and still going strong and played with daily. Our wooden set sits sad and lonely most days (weeks, really).

Btw, if I were just starting out, these are the things I'd buy:
Variety of track and a remote controlled train:

some hills:

and if you got this you'd really be all set for some great layouts:

Just the 1st one would be fine though.

DS started with the Timbertown Railway and it has been great to build on.

IMO any good deal on a set is a good starter, and you can add anything to it as you want. We got a lot of garage sale and hand me downs that we have added to our set we got 5 years ago... gosh, reality check! 5 years of fun with it (7 and 5 year old.)
