View Full Version : Do you get fundal height measurements?

Based on pp's thread about a 36w growth ultrasound I was curious if people are still getting fundal height measurements? Has that gone out of style? What do they do instead? If you don't have fundal height checks what do they do instead? What kind of practice do you go to (OBs, midwives...)?

I did with both DC - I saw an OB both times.

I see a midwife and get a fundal measurement each visit. I'm pretty consistently 1-3 cm short of my week (I was 33 at my 35 week visit, for instance). Same with my previous pregnancies.

First baby was with an OB at a large practice. They checked F.H
Babies #2 and #3 were with midwives who checked it as well.

I had fundal height checks with all 3 of my kids. First pregnancy primarily midwives, then OBs with the other two.

With ds1 I had OBs and a CNM- they checked.
With ds2 I had only CNMs and they checked.

Midwives for both pregnancies and it was monitored both times.

My OB doesn't take exact measurements, but she feels with her hands to make sure the baby's growing right.

I go to an OB, they don't take fundal height measurements. They check the heart beat at every visit.

I am seeing a different OB with this pg than my first 2. He does measure but started really late in the game. He is very laid back though. I usually measure right on track.

First pregnancy was with an Ob who checked fh at every visit.

2nd one was with a cnp who checked fh too. Had to switch due to change in insurance and my current Ob does not check fh. However going for another ultrasound at 37.5 wks and I asked what for and she said to check size and amniotic fluid.

I am nearly 35 weeks and my OB measures my fundal height. I am always within 1 cm of the # of weeks.

I've always had them, although I personally have always wondered if they have any reliability at all, especially since I suspect even the same person doesn't always start and stop measuring the uterus in the same place. And is it even a valid indicator of growth problems or anything else?

DD1 with an ob, had them. DD1, switched to CNM's, I think I had them there.
DD2, midwife in Belgium, had them. Saw an ob a few times too - don't remember if she did them too.
DS3, CNM, had them.

I got fundal measurements with all three pregnancies (and different OBs/practices each time.) The last OB never made a big deal about them. She'd just say, "looks good!" until the end when she started talking about how big the baby might be.

My OB did not do them. I am not sure how accurate they are. On the good side, they are really not a risky procedure.

None here, though like other posters, my OB always feels to gauge size and position. The heartbeat is checked at every visit, too.

I had this with all 4- after 20 weeks. I am pretty consistently 2-3 cm behind & my babies are pretty short & light weight. I have seen 4 different OBs.

I had them done at every appt after 20wks and measured 1-2cm behind at pretty much all checks until the end where I was measuring 4cm behind. I just had a long torso and baby in the 10th %tile...she was a peanut, too, at birth.

Yes, all 3 practices I used (all midwives) used them.

During my last pgcy with DS2, I was measuring 4+ weeks ahead at 16ish weeks so the (overreactive?) midwife I saw at the time sent me for another US to rule out twins, even though I had an early one around 9-10 weeks showing only a singleton pregnancy. It was a singleton and everything evened out down the road in terms of fundal height. My uterus was just all too accustomed to growing quickly I guess ;)

My OB did them at every appt after 24 weeks, and only sent me for a growth US at 35 weeks due to high BP issues, otherwise she does not schedule growth US.
