View Full Version : be truthful is your child named after a fictional character?

I heard a story this morning on the radio about a 24 yr. old with the name of Lando Carlrissian (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1335063/Star-Wars-named-murder-suspect-Lando-Calrissian-Young-arrest-5-years-run.html) being arrested during a gang fight. So this prompted the DJs to have people call in and state if they have named their kids after a fictional character. Here were some of the responses I heard:

Alysin Wonderland (yes that is how the dad said they spelled the name Allison)

Raphael (was named this by his father because he liked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Dexter (yes after the character on the Showtime show, not the cartoon Dexter's Labratory).

ETA: my children are not, although DD2 is Lauren, and Conrad is a family name from my mom's side, but I knew I better not use Conrad as her middle name or someone would think I named my child after a former reality TV star.

Well the true answer is no, but I doubt people believe us!

DD is Emily Elizabeth (of Clifford fame), but it's honestly just a first name that we loved paired with a family middle name. I'd never read Clifford prior to having her.

Sort of. We chose the name Alaric from a favorite book series, but I wouldn't say we named him _after_ a fictional character; that's just where we first heard the name. And it is a real name (though unusual in these parts), not one created just for a fictional character.

No, but I would do it. I'm not sure why it would be something to be embarrased of. Several of my favorite names come from fictional characters I admire/have great affection for.

If I ever have a girl, I want to name her after my grandmother, Johanna. But for a while I was thinking of a middle name of Leigh. my grandfather lovingly always called my grandmother Hannahleigh and I thought I'd call my child that. Then a friend pointed out that it sounds like the place where Puff the Magic Dragon lives.

I'm not going to share the name, but if I would have had a girl, yes her first name would have been after a strong female character in a book that I really like. DS2's name is a classic, but not popular name and we chose it b/c of a character that we really liked in a favorite movie.

Or Alaric Morgan, Deryni Duke of Corwyn? (yes, I'm a geek, no surprise, I'm sure)

Mine aren't, but I wouldn't hesitate. If I had another girl, I'd love to name her Keladry, after a great book character. DH wouldn't go for it, though, I'm sure.

I don't have a problem with it, provided it's not ultra stupid like Nic Cage naming his kid after Superman's real name. I'm not too fond of that Alysin name, partially cuz I don't like super funky misspellings, but more cuz it's like a porn/stripper name.

DD is named after a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and a Victoria's Secret model. Well, the SI model name is just cuz we liked it but we (I did anyways, altho DW and my sis know) did pick the middle name in honor of that VS model.

I like Alaric. Cool name actually.

No.

Though T's name is the direct result of admiring the work of Tobias Wolff the author.

And F's full name is a rather obscure name of a dead Hogwarts headmaster from Harry Potter. However, I did not realize this fact before we chose the name nor do I remember it from the Harry Potter books before he was born.

Mine aren't but one of them shares the name of a semi-popular teen character from the 90s. But the show has been off the air for so long, no one ever mentions it.

I think a lot of good names come from fiction, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Better than naming your kid Paris ;)

Nope.

In fact, Andy's name was going to be Edward Vincent, which is my father's & fil's middle names. Right after DH and I had picked Edward, there was a news (fluff?) article about how Edward and Jacob had become such popular names because of Twilight. I didn't want him to have to deal with that, so we went with Andrew Bryce, which are not family names. I'm a little bummed that we didn't use the family names for such a silly reason, but we also didn't like the nicknames Eddie and Vinnie.

Although, on the way to the hospital, DH wanted to change the name again. It wasn't the best timing on his part. :D

That's cool! I read that comic strip from the time I was a little kid until it stopped running a few years back. My life paralells their life too (except for the first born I am a girl, and the second born being a boy, but me and my brother are about the same ages as Michael, and Lizzie, and my sister is 3 yrs. older than April) so if it was going on in FBOFW it was going on in our life too. Once when I was 12 my dad came into the room (we were at some friends' house) and said "Ellie's pregnant," and I just about had a heart attack as I thought he meant my mom (and if being 9 and having a pregnant mom would've been hard, imagine being 12 then???), but he meant Ellie in FBOFW who had just announced she was having an "oopsie" baby. I was soo thankful!

Nope, but every one assumes that DS is named after a very popular comic book character. We always have to explain that while we are big comic book fans, there was no intent to name DS after a comic book character. DH and I deliberated about the name for the longest time for that very reason, but in then end we decided to stick with the name we loved because it just fit so well with the middle name we had chosen.

Tamora Pierce!

I'm reading Trickster's Queen now (for the third time...)(this year)

Yep! I read the Protector of the Small every three months or so, and the Trickster books, too. I want more Tortall!

And, just to clear it up, my son is NOT named after Forrest Gump! That was the one downside to choosing that name, at the time, people thought he'd be teased. Well, that movie was from 1989, and MY Forrest was born in 2004, so we risked it.

My middle name is Trinity, and I've always liked the idea of using that, but was hesitant (and DH adamant) because of the Matrix movies. Didn't like the character enough to have that association made for the rest of a daughter's life.

If T had been a girl he would have been Josephine Avery. I can't deny that Jo March was my main factor guiding this decision. In keeping with the LOTR theme, yes. DH is a huge Tolkien fan. DD is named in part after Sam's daughter. I think she is only mentioned in the Silmerillion (sp?). Lula's name is the same as a fictional character, and a real live star too. But we picked it because it was traditional and old fashioned, and was from DH's family's country of origin. It suits her personality.

Does it count that we were going to name Dolly 'Ursula' until I remembered the big nasty purple witch in The Little Mermaid was Ursula. :( there went that one. I even had a name necklace already made for her. Boo.

DW wanted to name our daughter Logan, after her favorite soap opera character. She was adamant Logan was a girl's name and that everyone who heard it would think of a girl and prolly that character. I was adamant that people would think Wolverine, who's a boy, or otherwise it's a boy name. Cuz we couldn't agree, so that name got ruled out. :D

I have a girl named Logan and I can tell you that no one thinks "girl" when they hear it. Every time we go to the dentist, they have pack of stickers ready to hand her and it's always Spiderman. They get confused when they see a girl sitting in the chair!

At her school there is another girl named Logan, but no boys. That is surprising given the popularity of the name for boys. We picked out the name before she was born and didn't know what we were having, so that was the name either way.

no one has ever confused her with Wolverine though :)

I wanted a similar name for our younger daughter; something that was traditionally a boy name that had just started being used for girls. The leading name on our list was Quinn, but when we saw her picture we knew that none of the names on our list would work. (and thank goodness we didn't go with Quinn now that Glee is popular). We used a translation of her birth name, so she has a very feminine flowery name which doesn't really go with Logan, but oh well it suits her.

funny though now that I say that, I realize that I have one frilly feminine girly-girl with a boy name, and one less girly-girl with a very feminine name. It works for me.

I hear Logan, I think boy. And Wolverine.
I do like it for a girl, though.

Does it count that we were going to name Dolly 'Ursula' until I remembered the big nasty purple witch in The Little Mermaid was Ursula. :( there went that one. I even had a name necklace already made for her. Boo.

One of my first friends to have a little girl way back in 2003 named her daughter Ursula and that was the only thing I could think of too.

I have a friend who has a daughter named Logan and I really like it as a girls name too, but it never really gained popularity in either one of our lists, but yeah prior to meeting her and her daughter I had never met a female Logan.

No, but two names that I would have considered are:

Lucas, and I'm sure it's partly after the movie with Corey Haim. So cute.

Lyra, after the character in the Golden Compass series.

DD would have been Lucas had she been a boy (though there are a thousand and one Luke, Luka, Lucas's in our area) and I read the Golden Compass series after she was born...

I actually don't mind it for a girl. But yeah, all my friends think Wolverine when you say "Logan." And while I'm sure that soap opera Logan is pretty, nice, or whatever, Wolverine is short, very hairy, and extremely foul tempered. Not the image I wanna project onto my daughter. :p

Well, mine is not a character, but a line from a John Hughes film- the Sure Thing. My son's "the kind of guy you can drink a beer with".

(where's Susan, she knows the answer to this one!)

Boo.

But I love, love, love her name. It is pronounced differently in Spanish, which is the main language where we live. I think the local pronounciation is going to stick because I love it! :)

I love your DDs; names. I wanted to use your DD1's name, but our old neighbor had a daughter by the same name, and we thought that was too close at the time.

I definitely think of Little Mermaid when I hear Ursula! I love the name you ended up with.

(You could have made her name here Ursula instead of Dolly!!)

**I love Lula and Dolly, too. So, they have good real and BBB names!! ;)

Awww, thanks! I considered using Ursula as her BBB 'handle' but decided that Dolly was faster to type ;)

Yes, mine are. DS1 is named for a well known literary character and then the middle name of DS2 (but what we call him) is sort of inspired by a famous 20th century film director. For DS2 we almost considered the name Emerson for his first but settled on another, family name, which probably has now become more relevant (and maybe popular) due to the Twilight series. I have never read the Twilight series but our dental hygienist told me.

No, but Jelly Bean's most common nickname was mentioned upthread, and her pawpaw calls her by another nickname which is also a fictional character.

DH campaigned for Lorelei, Miri (from Star Trek), Karys (from The Mummy), and Miranda (which I didn't know was from S&tC--that might explain people's very mixed reactions when I said it was under consideration) but we didn't use any of those.

Miranda (which I didn't know was from S&tC--that might explain people's very mixed reactions when I said it was under consideration)

I was a SATC fan but I still think of Miranda as a Shakespearian name. It would be sad if SATC took over Miranda, Samatha and Charlotte the same way friends ruined Monica and Phoebe.

None of my kids are named after fictional characters, but my mother named me Jaime after the Bionic Woman TV show in the 70's. She copied it right down to the different spelling. Anytime I meet anyone my age with a name identical to mine I ask if they were named after the Bionic Woman too. Often the answer is "yes!"

My first son is. Mason Capwell of Santa Barbara, baby! Not only a fictional character, but a soap opera character that I loved when I was a teenager!

I gotta respect this, man. But honestly, Mason? Cruz was hotter.

Ok, well. No. However, I totally would. For years and years, I wanted to name my daughter something that would give me away to anyone who knows me, so I won't say it, but it's a very obscure Star Trek reference. Everyone I knwo -- I mean EVERYONE -- hated it and begged for me to have boys. And so I did :-).

Now, my on-air name when I was a DJ was Marlena Blaine. After Marlena on Days of our Lives.

DS1 is named after Ferris Beuller's BFF. I saw the movie when I was 16 and walked out of the theatre and said to my friends, "If I ever have a boy, his name will be Cameron." I had never really heard the name before.

When we named DS Logan - we didn't know what we were having. Since it was for Wolverine...it really wouldn't work well on a girl in our family! LOL

The only downside is we live near Boston....and our airport is named Logan Airport.

NO, we didn't name our son after the airport....Yes, it's after Wolverine....No Nana, I will not stop telling people that!! ;)

It was a different Susan (ChunkyNicksChunkyMom), but any Susan that knows The Sure Thing is a friend of mine!!!!

"The kinda guy who doesn't care if you puke in his car. "

And of course, I didn't name him Elliot- "Elliot's a fat kid with glasses who eats paste".

Yep, John Hughes named my son.

Oh, I wanna know the name :D! For some reason, I was thinking Tasha or Deanna from TNG- but know I am wondering how obscure your choice was.

For the record, my oldest DS was named Jack because a loooong time ago I read a Stephen King novel and the main character was a 12 year old boy named Jack. He was such a strong character and he made a real impression on me, and I told myself that if I ever had a boy, his name would be Jack.

I vetoed two names based on associations with fictional characters.

DH suggested Reagan, which I vetoed because that's the name of the little girl who gets possessed in The Exorcist AND it's the name of one of King Lear's older daughters, despite the different spelling of "Regan", giving it double bad karma.

He then suggested Natasha, which I vetoed because it immediately makes me chuckle, put on a super-fake Russian accent and say "Moose and squirrel." (He insisted Rocky & Bullwinkle is so hopelessly outdated that nobody would make that association ... but all of our mutual friends on FB made the same comment, so I got to say "I told you so.")

DS is Logan, we didn't really think too much about other Logan's until after, and although I used to watch the Bold and the Beautiful DH and I both thought of Det. Mike Logan on Law & Order, one of our fav. shows. I have only met boy Logan's since having our Logan.
