View Full Version : Dress me for my office Christmas party -- Holiday Disco?

I will preface this with I HATE OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTIES. But, I am going.

My office dress style is business casual for most people, except for those of us in hearings and for those days, its conservative suits. Boss is extremely conservative.

This party is "disco". WTF? Anyway, disco or not, I have nothing to wear. Zero. No party clothes in my closet and even if I did, they wouldn't fit.

Not really disco, but I was thinking a black sequin dress or tunic, but worn as a tunic with black leggings underneath? I don't even have appropriate shoes, but might be able to find some. I am going to a mall tonight.

The only thing disco I thought I'd do was blue eye shadow and I don't even own that!

Help!

I think I'd make my shoes the disco item. Shiny/glittery platforms, right? And then I'd do a simple plain dress and my usual make up.

ETA. Are these disco? http://www.zappos.com/born-bliss-rosa-couture-lamb. They'd be cute with a plain black dress. I wouldn't do leggings and a tunic, that's the 80s not the 70s, isn't it?

I shouldn't even be surprised there's a WikiHow on the subject: http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Great-at-a-School-Disco

And I found this: http://www.hairfinder.com/fashion/disco-look.htm

Honestly, I feel your pain. I'm terrible at dressing up, and dressing up for a theme would just throw me for a loop. My own response to this would be to wear something simple & dressy, and just enjoy the disco atmosphere. Do people in your office typically go all out for office party themes? You mentioned that your boss is conservative, do you think he is going to show up in a funky bell-bottomed suit?

Holiday disco?? Crazy. My first thought would be toward something neutral with sequins. There are logs of pretty tops out there that fit that bill.

Well when I think of disco, it's like the opposite of "office appropriate"!
I think of a sequins backless halter with no bra, bell bottoms, platform shoes (or roller skates) and feathered hair!
I hate shopping for parties like this. I have always gone to a thrift store in these instances.

Unless you're being graded on it I wouldn't sweat it or overthink it and wear something you like, feel good in and can hopefully get future use out of. I like the idea of sequin top and leggings and strappy metallic sandals. Or a simple knit dress with sparkly tights (all of these items are very available now) I wouldn't go too themey with the hair, maybe add some extra sparkle to your nails and eyes and a rhinestone hair accessory if you really want to play it up.

I remember my mom wearing wrap dresses and skirts with leotards.

No kidding. I am somewhat scared what I might see.

You don't happen to have any friends or family that are in theatre, do you? I'm sure they could find something you could borrow, given it's not being used for a current show.

That said, every non-profit, community theatre I know of shops at local thrift stores for costumes of every era...and usually you can find some pretty workable pieces. I'd look for a shiny top with hot pants, bell bottoms or even wide/boot cut jeans, or a skirt. I'd also go for platforms or metallic strappy shoes or even whatever modern knee height boots you may have. I'm sure you can find most of these pieces in a thrift store. If that seems like too much effort, pick one piece that you want to focus on and accessorize with you're regular clothes. (Think essence of disco) :)

Do a google image search for "disco clothes" and you'll get some great ideas.

Good luck...oh, and if you couldn't tell, I'm another of those nerdy people who's jealous that you get to do this. My favorite office party was an 1920's murder mystery! Hiss boo to the stupid, over-done "casino night" office party.

Well, yeah I would be too. But disco is just the theme, right? It isn't a costume party, per se. Or is it? That's why I was thinking a simple dress with glam 70s style shoes as a nod to the theme, rather than a full on disco dance costume. Well, that and I would feel extremely uncomfortable at a work party showing a ton of skin with super bright colors. . . .

ME TOO!!! I posted to get help about this earlier too for a casino-themed holiday party. I ended up choosing a simple black dress with black opaque tights, and I still need to find jewelry but will most likely choose a long, multichain necklace and call it a night:)

Bonus: it's cheap!

So I bet you could just go with something simple, and add disco-esque accessories:) Or shoes.

Hahahaha! Totally!

Ok, I am at a loss, but I do think that leggings are a decade later. I do agree that maybe picking one item, like the shoes or a top to be the disco item is enough. Maybe if you go to Party City and pick up a costume and only use the top or the bottoms? Ya know, assuming the costume has bottoms :-). Or you can do up the hair! Like a scarf as headband hanging down one side.

Thanks ladies. I found that Gap dress at a B&M Gap, but downtown only and I don't have time to get there before Thursday (am currently at home with a sick child, ugh). But, I like the look. Am going to the mall tonight so will check out similar styles.

Not sure about the platform shoes. I can barely walk in flats, LOL.

Bring out the flare legged pants and sequins!

I am off to the mall shortly.

I found this one: http://www.suzyshier.com/eng/productdetails/redirect.cfm?sectionID=b2c/style/productDetails.cfm&itemID=023246847338&&var=d&ckey=CA&place_holderID=15&IsShopbyFilter=Y&viewAll=Y

Maybe with black leggings and high heels? Not really disco, but kinda???

Also this one, though perhaps not tacky enough: http://www.suzyshier.com/eng/productdetails/redirect.cfm?sectionID=b2c/style/productDetails.cfm&itemID=023027077686&&var=d&ckey=CA&place_holderID=15&IsShopbyFilter=Y&viewAll=Y

I also kinda like this one -- its screams 70's to me, but not disco: http://www.suzyshier.com/eng/productdetails/redirect.cfm?sectionID=b2c/style/productDetails.cfm&itemID=013046847703&&var=d&ckey=CA&IsShopbyFilter=Y&viewAll=Y

I will promptly toss whatever I wear into the trash after this party, so I don't particularly care if they fall apart -- if they last 3 hours, I'm good to go.

I actually like that Gap dress, but there is no holy way I will get downtown to the location that actually has it in stock by tomorrow. DH, jacka$$ that he is, wouldn't go get it for me (and he could)

I like the 2nd one. I agree that it may not be tacky enough, but maybe you can wear it with some really long, sparkly earrings?

I agree. The only other route I think you could go, that might also not be tacky enough, is one of the sequined tank/shells that are so popular right now with either a longish black blazer with the sleeves rolled up and black leggings or with black flare leg pants and platformish heels. Make your hair big and wear blue eyeshadow.
