Same question- I found the drop down used books category, but it is a bit of a pain to do individual searches. How do you guys do it?

I used a keyword or title search for popular names ... Elmo, Thomas Train, Clifford, etc.

Thank you! I had no idea that Borders had a used book section, I just ordered 13 books for $18! Such a good deal. Where do they get these books? Are they used book stores or overstocks? Has anyone ordered from the used book section before?

Right now if you join Borders Rewards for $20 you can a $10 gift card, but it gives you free shipping on online purchases so for $10 it might be worth it if it applies to the used book section, does anyone know if it does?

Wow - my husband is going to be shocked at the amount of books I just bought. Let's just say that I got frustrated that you could only put 20 items in your cart at a time. $1.04 a book is just too good to pass up!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I just ordered 20 books for $31 (incl tax). Most were $1.04, but I got one cookbook that my mom wanted for $6. I got a bunch of books that were on my, DS1's, and DS2's Amazon wishlists. All were in "very good" or "like new" condition. I'm going to place a 2nd order since they only allow you to put 20 items in your cart at a time. Oh yeah, and I went through Ebates which gives you 7% cashback!

My DD is 15 months but I ordered for WAY off in the future! The selection and prices are so good I couldn't resist. Anyways, I ordered the classics: The Runaway Bunny, Chicka Chicka ABC, Go Dog Do!, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Maisy and Babar books.

I also went for award winning authors like Norton Juster (the Hello Goodbye Window), Eric Rohmann (My Friend Rabbit, Clara and Asha), Tad Hills (Duck & Goose books), and I also bought some Laura Numeroff books (If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, If you Take a Mouse to School) (thank you for the tip!!).

And, I ordered a few more. I looked for the "Like New Books" and mainly hardcover. I'm probably going to order a few more too!

Latully,

Thank you SO much for posting this. I did not realize borders had a used book section. I am a LLL leader and unfortunately, my co-leader did not keep up with our lending library very well. Throughout the yrs, we've had many books, "walk off," never to be seen again. I was able to order 15 books for our LLL lending library for $43 to replace many of the lost books and in addition, I got a few books that are new to our library. This saved our group a tremendous amt of $, for what would have cost us hundreds of dollars of books to replace.

I was also able to put in an additional order for books for our family. Thanks again!

My Bank/Debit card online. I just called customer service and it was totally useless, the girl didn't understand any question I was asking. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was on hold for almost 15 minutes. Finally the same girl comes back and says that's just the way we charge, once when you place the order to make sure we get the money and again when the order ships. The first charge will drop off tomorrow. This really annoys me, maybe its a one time thing but I won't be ordering from them again.

That seems strange. Did your books ship from different sellers? I thought the order doesn't get charged until it ships, so if your order is coming from different places, there will be several different charges. Perhaps the first charge was a mistake and that's why they credited you. As long as the final charges are all correct, it wouldn't bother me.

Sephora does sort of the same thing. Immediately after you place an order they bill you $1... and then when it ships, they credit the $1 and bill you however much it's supposed to be. I think a lot of places do similar things.

maybeebaby08
12-14-2010, 06:22 PM
I buy a lot online and haven't ever had this problem, usually it charges when it ships or it charges right away, I've never had the holds put on twice for the same order. I was more annoyed at the customer service then anything, I can understand the a glitch where it happens once, but if they always do it that way I won't be using them again plus they're customer service was really bad. I emailed them and hopefully will get a better answer.

It looks like they are slowly crediting my Borders bucks for my purchase. So far about $12 has been added to my balance (out of about $30 spent.) I got a cancellation too. Did everyone's e-mail address it as a return ("We're sorry that the items did not meet your needs")? This does kind of irk me. If it's OOS say so, don't write me and talk about how the item I wanted didn't meet my needs and so I returned it.

unfortunately, the second book looked worn and was DIRTY! eeww! i wiped the cover clean with a damp (vinegar) cloth. i'm not thrilled with it. it looks like a dingy old library book that i would avoid checking out. i may donate it to the library.
the third one is in good condition but has a name written on the inside cover.

i ordered a lot of books, so i'm hoping that the rest of them are like the first or third one that i received. i'll be disappointed if they are like the second -- not worth the $1.50.

You can only put 20 items in your cart at a time. You can make multiple orders though. There does not seem to be a limit on how many orders you can make. Jus don't ask me how I know that :D

I received 2 books today. One was in great condition and looked brand new. The other one was very old and the inside cover was all yellow. It was labeled as very good but I would not consider that very good condition. I have a lot of other books coming and hope that my other books are not like that. For $1.04 I'm not going to call Borders and complain but I'm thinking of calling them if I get some more like that to ask for a refund on those books.

Yeah, I opened up 6 packages I got so far. All the books I ordered were listed as "very good" or "like new." I ordered DS1 the first 6 books of the Hardy Boys series and the 2 books I got so far have worn tips on the cover. I would call that "acceptable" or "good" condition since the insides are fine, but definately not "very good." I wouldn't want to give it as a gift to someone else. And one of the board books I got had some dried food or something on one of the pages. I was able to wipe it off with a damp cloth, but I wouldn't call that very good condition either. I have 8 more packages of single books sitting on my couch that I haven't opened yet and I hope those are actually in very good condition. One of the books I ordered was a cookbook for my mom that she wanted and I can't give her some worn or dirty book as a gift!

I hesitated to order because I'm still unclear where these books are coming from and how they're being evaluatefd for condition. Is this a public marketplace akin to eBay? Are these folks finding books at garage sales and in their attics and then selling them? I have no problem with used books but there are some books that after flipping through I wouldn't pay 50 cents for let alone a few dollars.

I tried to find more information on the Borders site but came up empty. I tried to e-mail through Borders.com with my questions and the message came back that the service is temporarily unavailable and that I should try back later.

Does anyone know?

They do have ratings just like ebay. I like buying books at goodwill and yardsales so this doesn't bother me at all. As long as the books aren't down right dirty or falling apart, I am happy with titles for a buck or two. You can rate the seller after you purchase (at least two of my packages had a slip in there giving me directions on rating the purchase; they also said to contact them with concerns).

Well, 1/3 of the books from my first order have been canceled. :( I'm hoping that those that do arrive, are at least in decent condition. So far there are no cancellations from my 2nd order. It makes me think that the sellers that canceled did not update their book status or something and they must have already sold the book on another site.

Thanks for the feedback. As I said, I don't have a problem with used books but a lot of the titles I've searched are starting at $4-6 (I'm searching less popular books) so I was trying to decide whether I wanted to take the chance on individual sellers before I buy a stack of books from all over, KWIM?

I found it useful to click "Show More" at the bottom of each used book listed. This is where seller disclose stuff like: name written on inside cover, edgewear, small tear, etc. I looked at one book with sound listed as "very good" but the disclosure said "audio broken". Glad I didn't buy!

Mentioning it because I didn't see it at first so maybe I'm not the only one.

All the books we've gotten so far (maybe 6) have been in perfect condition. I would not expect that a $1.04 item (shipping incl.) would be something wonderfully giftable, but I'm pleasantly surprised by the ones that have arrived.

I'm only buying books that are 1 or 2 dollars. I'm not spending more money on a used book that I can't see the condition beforehand. In general I won't buy any used books that's more than a couple of dollars, unless it was an out of print title that I really want.

I just received a few of the MANY books I ordered. On the most part the quality has been pretty good - only one (Charlotte's Web) looked dingy although it was listed as "Very Good" condition. Another book (My Rabbit Friend) had a creased back page - it was also listed as "Very Good." None of the books looked new. I wouldn't give them as gifts. But for my library they are in very good (but used) condition.

I just wish there was some way to rate the seller! When I go to my order history it no longer shows who sent the book and only a few of the receipts show the actual seller (maybe I should save the mail packages and cross-reference it on-line). Even with the seller's name, how/where do you go online to rate them? With more accurate ratings then I could make better choices!

Overall, I am addicted to this used book section. I like the idea of simply recycling a book someone else has used AND getting some wonderful classics for $1.04. I hope it works out for you guys too!!:wink2:

:yeahthat: I'm having the same experience. So far, the vast majority of books are in great shape, but I got one today that looks like it was in a school library (a sticker on the cover seems to indicate this), and it's a paperback-type book, so it's nearly falling apart at the staples. Not pleased with this last one, though I'm inclined to just chalk it up to a learning experience due to the price...

I've gotten 2 books so far and they've both been brand new, I'm hoping that the rest are in great condition too. Even if they're not that won't bother so much because if I look at what I got overall it evens out in the end and I still made out way better then buying new. Plus DD is not always so gentle on the books anyway. The condition doesn't bother me so much because I'm not expecting new for $1, my sort floor books were in worse condition then what I've been getting. That being said I think Borders has horrible customer service (still haven't heard back by email or phone call) and that makes me pause to order but $1 for books with free ship is to hard to resist so I'll probably be ordering again.

I agree that their CS is terrible. I called the evening I placed the order with a question, waited 20 min to talk to someone, was put "on hold" after the lady took my order # (she put the handset down on her desk and from the sound of it was just getting her stuff together to leave for the day) for 10 minutes - then their call center closed and the line just went dead. So I emailed my question and STILL haven't received a response a week later.

I also haven't received any books from my 2 orders yet. But if they come, even if the condition isn't great, it's still a decent deal.

I received about 10 books so far and all but one have been in like new condition.

On the downside, I looked at two invoices today and noticed I was charged $1.99 instead of $1.04 and also charged for shipping. Unfortunately, I was bad about checking the previous invoices. I went back to check my cc and I have a lot of higher charges from Border, so I'm sure I was charged shipping. Now I have no way to prove it because I threw out all the invoices. Waaaa! Looks like I'm going to be on the phone with cs for a long time tomorrow. :(

I also received an invoice with books listed at the wrong price and shipping included. I just spent about 15 minutes gathering all my invoices and looking at my order and credit card bill. It turns out that everything on my credit card is correct (or the total adds up to exactly what it should, although it's a bit hard to follow with 6 charges and 1 "return".) Ugh, what a pain. I just hope the rest of my books arrive as described. One of the paperbacks I ordered ("very good" condition) arrived looking like someone had crumpled it up. The spine is even broken in multiple places from being bent in the wrong direction. I guess I won't have to worry about DD destroying that book.

Ugh, I am going to have to wait to see which books arrive and then go through my invoices and cc charge to see if they match up. I received a bunch of the books yesterday, but still have at least 10 more that need to turn up. Btwn all of the cancellations too, I have a feeling that things are all screwed up. Most of the books look ok, although several of them listed as, "very good condition" were not IMO that at all. I'm not sure if this was worth my while in the long run, b/c now it's become a headache for making sure that each book has charged and shipped correctly, sounds like borders.com doesn't have their act together.

I just checked my account and all the charges are correct. (Thankfully!)

A few of the books that were listed as "very good" I would list as "Like new" - but a few I received that were listed as VG I would list as just good..... but oh well, for $1, I would have bought it at a yard sale or flea market anyway, so I don't think it's a big deal at all.

I missed the free shipping to home deal, so I shipped all 11 books to store. I just picked up two today. They didn't call me, saying they haven't got round to do that, which I understand. Our local store had very long line even 8pm at night.

The condition of the two books were rated by seller as very good, but to me they are are like new. Each of them cost $1.99. There's a shipping slip in the package which says shipping cost $5 something and total adds up to around $12 or $13. I'm a bit confused. When I placed the order, the shipping was free. I hope this shipping cost is not billed to my credit card.

I've been a little disappointed so far and I'm not sure if I'll order again from Borders used section. I ordered a total of 40 books. A bunch of them were board books for DS2 and were listed either as "very good" or "like new" condition. I was planning on giving them to him for Christmas. Unfortunately, most of them have little issues that make them non-giftable (is that a word!?) in my mind (even though they're just going to DS). They have worn edges on the covers or tiny tears in the spines. I got one infant massage book for my doula library that has a pen mark drawn right across the cover! And the one cookbook I got to give to my mom for Christmas has a tiny tear on the edge of the cover and some scratch marks on it! I still plan to give it to her, but I'll explain that it was from the used Borders section (she already knew I had bought a bunch of books from them). I've bought used books before on Amazon and all the "very good" and "like new" books really were like new and without any issues. These books I'd call just "good" or "acceptable" and I would normally avoid those on Amazon. And the 6 Hardy Boys books that I got DS1 for Christmas all have worn corners on their covers and one book even had a signed Happy Birthday inscription on the inside cover from someone's grandmother!!!! Another book had several pages that got folded over in a row. I'm just going to give them to him after Christmas now. The two Captain Underpants books I got are in great condition so those he'll get for Christmas, which is good since those were actually on his wishlist. I really think they need to update their system and be better at disclosing the condition of the books and the sellers should have feedback ratings like they do on Amazon. I'm fine with getting books for myself at $1.04 with a few worn edges or a pen mark inside, but I want to know this before I order so I know what to expect when I open the package.

I'm finally getting keen on how this whole thing works. I ordered around 40+ books and received about half of them. Like I said in my previous post, most of them are good but not Like New and even Very Good. I would say about 1/2 of them so far are Very Good, the rest look used and the ones I received yesterday were downright poor (my Maisy with Flaps book was all taped together, with bite marks, and missing pull tabs from half of it!)

Anyways, I realized that I can go on Alibris and leave a review of the seller. The only thing is when I place an order I have to remember who it was with or sometimes the package will say the seller.

So far the worst culprit is Motor City Books (taped pages, missing parts of the spine, missing pull tabs) and a good seller is Blue Cloud. So, now I'm going to keep the information and rate the seller and maybe even edit this posting with my findings. (I'm still grateful for some great books but some of these sellers are very inaccurate.)

I'm going to go Wikileaks on them!:)

You can't see the name of the seller when ordering the books on Borders.com though, correct? So it's helpful to know in case we want to go through Alibris or directly through the seller, but when ordering through Borders it will be difficult to tell which seller is which (we could try to guess based on city & rating).

A few times it will show the seller when you click "show more" but, you're right, usually it doesn't. What I'm doing is writing down where my package is from (or checking my reciept).

Best Bargain Books (which has been GREAT) is out of East Patchoughue, NY and they seem to have a lot of books listed. Or, sellers like Blue Cloud are usually listed in the show more section and they are out of Phoenix, AZ.

I know its a lot to remember but I plan on using this used book section in the future. But, Borders does NOT make it easy!

I haven't received any that I ordered yet - I am hoping to use them as stocking stuffers, so I hope they get here and are in "like new" condition. None of the ones I ordered were as cheap as a dollar, I paid more in hopes of getting best condition.

One weird thing though - I ordered one book for me, that has been on my Amazon wishlist for awhile. I got an email saying it shipped on 12/18 - along with two other books. Yesterday, I got an email saying the return has been processed. For that ONE book - not the others that were included in the same shipping notification. Anyone have a similar experience? I can't return it if I didn't get it yet! Was this how they handle "cancellations?" At first I thought that was it, but it seemed odd that I got a shipping notice several days ago, and now it is returned.

Agreeing with PPs that the books I got from Best Bargain Books in East Patchogue, NY have all been brand new looking. I got 5 more packages today. I think we've gotten all of ours now. One has a funky smell. I probably should complain about it and toss it.

Instead of "Busy Bear Cubs" I received "SAMS Teach Yourself Today e-Trading". After spending more than half an hour on hold I sent their customer service an e-mail. I haven't heard back. I asked them to refund the purchase price of the book ($1.99 so not really that much) and said I'd be happy to return what I received at their expense. If I don't hear back soon I'm going to go ahead and look into disputing the charge on my credit card. Overall my experience with this sale was negative and I won't buy used books through Borders again.

I don't think I will either. Of my dozen books, maybe 3 are like new, 7 are good enough that I don't mind, but 2 are "I'd skip it if I saw it at the library for 25 cents". My "like new" The Little Red Barn has the last page ripped out. Oh well.

I think if Borders had a way to supply buyer feedback, the bad sellers would get weeded out quickly. But as it stands, I don't have reason to believe that books I order will come as described.

I'm not outraged or anything like that. Everything I ordered was under $3. I don't have any desire to spend time getting refunds for a pittance. It is nice to have a bunch of new books for my little girl. And I do like free shipping offers from vendors. Just wish their product was up to snuff!

I had ordered around 14 books, I believe, and have received them all now.

I got most before Christmas, so I was able to give them to DS as his Christmas gift. Although I wouldn't want to give any of these as gifts to kids outside my family due to their used condition, I've been happy with the purchase and would buy used books again from Borders with free shipping (with ebates I ended up paying less than $1 per book).

One did have a kid's name written inside but that doesn't bother me. A couple almost looked brand new and the others were in OK condition even though some were library books.

DS doesn't care that they're used and was really excited about getting lots of books for Christmas and has already read one and is on to his second now.

I am super frustrated that I have not received 3 out 7 books shipped 12/11 (part of a larger order, presumably the shipping notice was a group from a single seller as I received multiple shipping notices). I have sent borders an email that has not been responded to. Argh! So hesitant to try phoning. Anyone else having issues, or resolved issues? I wish I had kept the packaging for the books that did ship!

They're probably being shipped media mail so it's going to be very, very slow.

I placed three different orders for a total of 35 children's books. I would say about 75% of the books received so far are near perfect and the rest are in really good condition. I tried to order most books with a dust jacket so that the cover underneath is in good condition. I did receive one book that turned out to be a board book although I could swear I ordered the hard cover.

I appreciate that, but when the site says 3-8 days, it's still disappointing. I am waiting to receive the last of mine also.

Mine are also still trickling in (I did place a second order on FS day, so later than the first). I probably need to check my original order or I won't even know if I get them all. I've been in general very pleased and would totally buy used from Borders again if another free shipping code came up!

Has anyone not gotten all their books yet? I had them shipped to the store, since I couldn't get the free shipping to work, but I still have 3 books (from an order of 8) that haven't arrived yet. It's almost a month after I ordered them - I'm rather disappointed that I haven't gotten them yet!

I'm still waiting on quite a few that I ordered the second time around and one or two from the initial orders.
