S/O: Favorite Icing Recipe for Sugar Cookies?

I'm hoping to make cookies with the girls this year so I'm following the sugar cookie recipe thread. I always buy ready made icing (because it is easy), but i don't care for it and would love to try making it myself this time. Anyone have a great recipe that they would like to share?

I like more of a buttercream icing on my sugar cookies but this looks like a winner if you like royal icing.

I use frosting merely as a glue for sprinkles and to add color. So, I just mix water and powdered sugar together till I have a good consistency (not too stiff, not too runny). I like it too b/c no dairy means that I can keep them out for days and not worry about them.
