using furniture sealant?

I was looking at World Market dining tables again today and asked the guy if they scratch easily. he suggested furniture sealant. I imagine that is probably on the BBB never to be used list :) but just in case.. I thought I would ask if anyone has experience with this. I don't want to use glass due to the earthquake risk - I think that would freak me out, esp. since we would be seeking refuge under this table!!

Or I could use a lot of tablecloths for everyday use, I suppose.
