View Full Version : Sprog needs a baby doll!

Yeah, she thinks so. Everything human-shaped is "baby-baby" and she lunges at every doll in the store. :) Mommy isn't so into dolls, though, so I need recommendations.

Here's the thing: all the baby dolls I see in the stores kinda creep me out. It's the staring, plastic heads, I think. Just kidding, mostly. But most of them seem really ugly. I was horrified to see that many of the baby dolls appear to be wearing makeup! (?)

I'd like to get her a "baby" that will last. Maybe one without a plastic head? And one whose body feels very nice to hold and cuddle. Fun, funky style is a big bonus!

By the way, thanks to everybody who suggested the radio flyer push wagon. I just ordered it online and Sprog is very excited. (Not really, she's got no idea. But I'm excited.)

DD was just pushing around her baby in the RF pusher wagon so of course you need a baby for it. DD (and a lot of other people's) first doll is a corolle calin. Plastic face but snuggly, the right size for 1-3 year olds. DD has 2 (calin and tidoo) and is just starting to prefer some of her other dolls over them. We got a bitty baby this past summer (while we were in Chicago and could go to the AG store) and she is just now growing into it. We also have a (ok 3-2 were mine) Cabbage Patch kids but they are way to big.

DD has quite a few babies (not a ton but a variety of shapes and ethnicities). Hands down, she goes for her corolle tidoo first and her corelle calin yang second. She says they are friends. It's very cute. I think the 14" dolls are a nice size for the 1-2 yo set. Not funky by any stretch, but they do seem to have longevity.

Maybe a Corolle Babipouce (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=corolle+babipouce&x=0&y=0)? It's available in different colors, and there are a few that aren't the usual pinks/pastels (perhaps look at the Rainbow and Grenadine), so maybe those would appeal to you more. It's washable, too.

Thanks! A couple questions about the Corelle dolls:

1) How strong is the "vanilla scent?"
2) What are the bodies like?
3) Are they available in any stores? For the price, I'd like to see one in person before buying online.

They do seem more likeable than the scary Circo dolls I saw at Target today. :)

Hang on here! ... I did a search and there seems to be a "corelle" and a "corolle." Some of the dolls look identical, same names even. Is it the same company?

1) How strong is the "vanilla scent?" Not very, you have to have it in your face befoedr you smell it. Strawberry shortcake is stronger
2) What are the bodies like? soft fabric filled with beans
3) Are they available in any stores? For the price, I'd like to see one in person before buying online. Do you have any high end toy stores? DD's first one came from a high end toys store locally. Also this company has pretty good pictures of the dolls.

We love our Cailin and Tidoo but you might like Baby Stella better.

The company is corolle. The other is a typo. (FWIW Corelle is a dishes company.)

DD hated the Corelle dolls, however she loved Pink Checked (outfit) Baby Huggums from Madame Alexander. 12 inches, plastic head, soft baby. As she got older Bitty Baby was a hit. For her, any doll with rooted or wigged hair flipped her out, so plastic molded heads were the top choice.

If you like Waldorf style dolls, Magic Cabin has some really nice ones. Soft body and head.

Hey, you're right! I thought it was a coincidence that the dishes and babies had the same name.

But you know, people are spelling it incorrectly all throught this board! Guess it's a common error.

I have a son and he really enjoys his Stella doll (katydid mentioned this earlier). There is a boy and girl version. DS has the boy and he enjoys it. They're very soft and no plastic at all. Lots of fun!

Check etsy. If you want one that is not plastic you have a ton of choices. You can use the phrase "waldorf doll" and it will show many. Some will do customs and you can get as funky as you like. I've seen many with bizarre hair colors, etc.

Pottery barn kids has some really cute baby and toddler dolls (made by north American bear co, fwiw) that are all fabric and have a waldorfy look to them without the waldorfy price tag. We also like calin and cabbage patch kids around here.

What's our budget?

It aught to be modest. :) Less than $50. But I'm learning that sometimes, because of all the "love" baby stuff gets, quality is worth the price.

And for something as personal and long-lasting as a first baby doll, it's also meaningful to buy from a personal business / craftsperson, if you KWIM?

Thanks! A couple questions about the Corelle dolls:
1) How strong is the "vanilla scent?"

My nose is pretty sensitive so I worried about the doll's scent, but it really doesn't bother me. You really do have to put your nose right to the doll's face to smell it, like PP said.

2) What are the bodies like?

The Babipouce's body is just like a stuffed animal (I think the other models have the beans, which PP mentioned). The fabric is soft velour.

DS2 has one and it is his lovie for 2 years now. Vanilla scent fades and you can wash it which is nice. The body is soft bean bag sort of -- good for snuggling. I've seen it in several non-chain toy stores.

DD1 got her Baby Stella when she was one and it was a big hit. She got a Corolle Doll for her second birthday and it is her current favorite although Stella still has to be in her crib every night. The Stella doll is a lot less "girly" than the Corolle which appealed to me. Another feature that the Stella has is that it is a lot more difficult to take her clothing off. DD's poor Corolle doll is always naked ;)
I like the Stella for the under 2 age and the Corolle for the slightly older child.
Honestly, I don't think that you could go wrong with either choice.

These are the ones we have.

Have you played on Esty looking for what you want? I suggest doing some "Fantasy Shopping " (like Fantasy Football but more fun) to try to find a style that suits you.

Our youngest (2.5 yo) was given a Baby Stella for her first birthday to try and distract her from the oldest's Corolle Calin. She ended up "adopting" the Calin a few month later. She loves both and alternates between the two fairly often. Although she does tend toward the Calin, I think, because it is smaller.

I would get a Corolle Calin or Tidoo for a 1yo. I would NOT get a Babipouce for a 1yo (I got one for a newborn).

Why not? Too light?

I read that Calin has a beanbag body, which sounds nicer. Personally, I like dolls and stuffies to have some weight to 'em.

I dunno, everything except the face is like a stuffy, not a doll.
