Displaying family pictures

So I would like to finally display some of our family pictures in this house. In a different house I had some framed in silver with mats that go with the picture colors and hung directly on the wall.

I think I'd like to switch them all to black frames and white mats. And I'd like to use a picture ledge. The wall I want to use is in the living room and is off white. The carpet is taupe. (yes, this is a rental). We have mostly dark brown furniture. The art on the other side of the room (this is an open living room and dining room) is paintings of trees with red blossoms, one has a pale blue background). The accent pillows in the living room are red.

I'm not sure what color ledge to get? Well, actually I'd probably be getting two or three. Something dark brown? Like this. http://www.potterybarn.com/products/rustic-wood-ledge/?pkey=cledge-shelf. Or something else?
