Ds' birthday is coming up soon, and I would love to get him something he really, really likes. Out of everything I have bought for him, I would really not say there is anything he loves (including those things he has specifically asked for). He has Thomas train track set (does not play with), legos (does not play with), a huge fire truck (which he plays with occasionally), a toy computer (no), and plenty of other things. He and dd mostly like to run around the house pretending something or other.

My sister got him a remote control motorcycle, which I think he will like a lot.

Any suggestions (or just tell me what your ds likes)? I don't want to go the video game route.

DS loves playing dress up. He's 6yo and still pulls out his bin of dress up clothes.

LOVES matchbox cars and his racing track. There are these custom cars that you can build different ways from Hot Wheels. But DS has always been into cars/trucks from a very young age.

Very into legos.

DS got into Star Wars from about 5.5. We have light sabres, action figures.

Building with blocks is a big hit - but I've noticed he plays more with blocks at school and at our gymnastics place.

My oldest is 5 and I joke that his favorite toy is a stick. But really, he just doesn't play with toys much. The most used things are star wars action figures, and outdoor toys like his bike and rip rider caster bike--well and board games we play as a family.

Ds1 loves his lego sets, magna tiles, and most non fiction books

DS is 5 and has really gotten into Legos over the past few months. He adores Harry Potter lego. He also really likes building with magnatiles. But his favourite toy is paper, scotch tape, a pair of scissors and markers. He likes building 3 dimensional models to play with. He also likes his leapster explorer and DH's DS.

Super Hero Capes are BIG hits here (3 and 5 yo boys)
Light Sabers / Star Wars Action Figures
Playmobil (prepare yourself for a MILLION pieces) We have the castle and pirate sets.
They are big dinosaur/animal fans and have LOTS of Schleich from Target

I forget where you are but if warm enough they LOVE riding bikes/scooters and the sand box. They literally spend hours in the sand box with the Schleich animals and some trucks.

DS1 loved his cars. We have indoor cars that are used just to ride around the house. He also loved the unit block sets. Building high and long is great fun, esp with mom and dad.

Clear Magnatiles 100 piece set. That's all he plays with for the past 2 years. Had to buy an additional set.

DS2 is turning 5 next month. He loves his magnatiles (we just got a second set of 100, and he now loves them even more), Hexbug nanos, Razor scooter, bike w/ training wheels (may learn to ride without the trainers this summer), Hot Wheels with a "road rug" from Ikea, books and Legos. The Legos are a pretty new thing, though - DS1 was probably 6yo before he really got into Legos, so your DS may come around on those with time.

Oh, Play Doh is really big with him, too.

A super hero cape is a great idea. DS2 is starting to get into games but he doesn't love them yet.

My 5.5 yr old loves

His razor scooter

His Bike

His Imaginext stuff ... got a bat cave last Xmas and the space shuttle this xmas. He also got a serpent pirate ship that was on clearance at Target for 8 bucks that he thinks is pretty cool too. He has the robot police headquarters on his wishlist for his birthday in May!

He loves his Buzz Lightyear wings and gauntlet that grandma got him for Christmas. I am sure he would love a proper superhero cape ... he has a dracula cape (from Halloween) that he loves to put on and run around in.

He has Magformers on his wishlist as well. QVC had a good price on them at Xmas.

Thanks everyone! Great info.

Does anyone have one of those play car rugs they like? I am thinking about one of those for him. Out of everything described, I dont think he would *love* anything that he doesnt already have...well, maybe some of the active superhero stuff, but that is just not working around the house right now.

We're really into legos here, all the boys are except the baby. At 5 I start seeing them playing with toys less, and doing more imaginary play with light sabers, etc. We also love board games here, and I like that we can play as a family.

DS loves Imaginext and Schleich knights right now. Both are great for imaginative play.

imaginext space station and rocket are getting the most play here. He also likes the batman one. He also likes dress up clothes. Maybe your DS would like a superman cape from that etsy person (superfly or something like that?). The mini trampoline get a lot of play here as well for my active DS. (And I could see him jumping with the cape on!). Play swords/light sabers (but look out!).

Razor Scooter is definitely his favorite!

Others: Legos, Cars movie vehicle, still plays some Thomas. Magformers weren't a huge hit, yet he still plays with Krinkles he's had since he was 2. coloring and drawing.

We have a road rug from Home Depot- it was maybe $19.99 and has a home depot on it!
