Does anyone have a shoe cubicle or other type of shoe storage that could work well in an foyer? The house we are moving to does not have an entryway closet so I need something to place our shoes in when we walk in the door with wet or dirty shoes.

It doesn't organize them, but I just bought a large basket at JoAnns and set it next to the door. In wet/snowy weather we leave shoes on the mat inside the door until they're dry, then put them in the basket. In dry weather I tell the kids when we come in to put them into the basket. It's something kids are easily able to help clean up as well.

We just use something like this, though ours isn't from Ballard. It's a decent compromise, because it's rubber, but it's still attractive.

You mean a big, giant pile behind the door is not acceptable????

We have used one similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Honey-Can-Do-SHO-01483-Shoe-Tree-Spinning-Shoe-Shelf/dp/B0041RRPOM

And now they get lined up under the dresser we have in the foyer.

We previously used a big basket with some success.

And at one time, we used this for wet/dirties, but it has since been moved to hold dog and cat food and water bowls: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/garage/lawnGarden?productId=10007173

Wet/dirty shoes now stay on the porch or are carried through to the garage.

Ikea has some pretty nice looking shoe cabinets. I've never used them so I can't comment on how they work irl.

If I had room in my foyer, I would go for one of these cabinets or benches. Some of there are really very attractive and I love multi-function furniture.

We have the same problem at our new house. Since we live in a cold climate we have snowpants, boots, gloves, hats, coats, extra shoes, etc for 6 people. I bought 2 of these right before Xmas. We got the combo seat bench with the overhead basket/coat hook set.

I love them. They are excellent quality and look great. The baskets are roomy and hold a lot of big shoes. They do have to be completely assembled though, and DH said the assembly was tricky. But they look like something bought at high-end furniture store.

That website gave me a discount and free shipping before Xmas. Not sure those incentives are still available.

ETA the correct link.

DH built this:

I love it. We found baskets at Cost Plus.

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! I think I am going to get the trays that boolady suggested and wait until after we move to determine whether we need a bench as DH is worried about pinched fingers since DS2 is only 2. Hayneedle has some great stuff. Thanks again!

We have one of the Ikea ones in our Garage by the door into the house and we love it. Ours has four "cabinets" which means one for each of us.

Thanks for posting! I love this, and especially the price! Now, DH isn't handy and we have no space for building projects, but maybe I can get my dad to build it for me...:D

We have two of these - one by each door (front and back to garage). We also have a large rubber tray from Lowes for boots in the winter. This was on sale for 19 or 24 when I got them, and has held up well for about 3 years so far. It also comes in wood color I think. It was super easy to assemble (I did it myself and I am NOT handy). I labeled each column for each of my kids, and can easily fit at least one pair of their shoes in each box (2 of the littlest kids). We can also fit one pair of adult summer shoes (sandals, or something small). DH's larger shoes (mens dress) will only fit one shoe in each cubby.

Has anyone mentioned the IKEA ones yet? I would like to try them. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30110832 Actually, I like this one (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90178174) better. They seem to have a bunch, though... http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/hallway/10456/

we just put them on a mat next to the door, and I try to keep the pile at a minimum by making sure it's only in-season footwear that is there. I have thought of having baskets or cubbies or so on but I just don't like that idea because then if stuff is wet or snowy it will just get nasty. So we just use a mat, and if it's not in season, it goes in the bedroom closet until it is.

Something I really coveted but DH said no way to though was a cubby system for all the kids' stuff, like a preschool would have. Like this: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11182514&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|48022|62822|62820&N=4045124&Mo=11&pos=5&No=1&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=62820&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC25415-Cat62822&topnav=

DH said that would be a little over the top. So we skipped it. But if something like that appeals to you I later realized a much cheaper solution would be to buy these at Ikea http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11182514&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|48022|62822|62820&N=4045124&Mo=11&pos=5&No=1&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=62820&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&ec=BC-EC25415-Cat62822&topnav= 1 for each kid and just rig them out to suit your needs. (I swear they were only $25 when we looked - maybe they were on sale...)

At any rate we ended up getting a small coat rack for the kids and hanging it low so they can hang their stuff up, and then a big one for big people up high. We used to have just a coat tree in the back sun/mudroom but it wasn't working for the front of the house.

I hate not having a coat closet...

Boolady, we ended up getting these:

Love em!

Thanks for the rec! Cheap and they look very nice next to our doors!

Glad they worked out! We love the one we have, and given that it's rubber, I feel confident that it'll protect the wood floors.

We have something similar to this by our front door - http://www.amazon.com/Mahogany-Satin-Nickel-Shelf-Stacker/dp/B001L7PDY4/ref=sr_1_88?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1296238161&sr=1-88

I put the wet shoes on the front door mat until they dry then move them over to the rack. However, the boot tray would be nice to have in the garage for the wet shoes.
