Is there a trick to getting sprinkles on the sides of a cake?

I am making a homemade birthday cake today. How do you get the sprinkles to stick on the sides? Is there a trick? I always think the cake looks so plain with just sprinkles on top.


FWIW, the cake is a 2 layer 9" round cake. TIA

I usually have to take handfuls and smoosh them on. Depends on the frosting though and some will stick better.
