I know there are some awesome cake decorators and creative mamas out there! I need some help designing DS's 1st birthday cake. I'm not even sure of a theme (or if I'll have a theme) so any fun ideas are welcome.

My first thought was to make a few blocks out of cake, but that seems a little boring. From pictures I've seen, they're usually covered in fondant, too, which I'm not a big fan of. I'll use fondant for decorations, but preferably not for the entire cake. It tastes bad.

Also, should I have a little cake for DS to destroy, and then a bigger cake for guests? A cake/cupcake combo?

Thanks! I'm so excited :love-retry:

I went with the Wilton giant cupcake for ds2's b-day because I thought it was so fun and I liked the cupcake theme. I gave ds2 a smaller (normal sized) cupcake for him to dig into and he liked that!

I always like the 3D Wilton animal cakes, like a big teddy bear. I'm a big fan of cutesy for little ones' b-days!

Have you seen the books "Hello Cupcake" and "What's New, Cupcake?"? They have some super adorable ideas, like a fun jungle one.

Family Fun's website, the Wilton website http://www.wilton.com/ideas/browse.cfm?start=1&cat=Cakes&cel=1st-Birthday, and then that blog people posted the other day http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ all have really good cakes!

I am thinking about the same things. I was looking at:

I am planning to find a cheaper one, but that sort of idea.

I love this caterpillar cake! It would be super easy to make and the head could be "his" cake...and cupcakes for the guests.

I was thinking of doing a huge cupcake just for DS! Those are so fun, and will look way better in pictures than a plain sheet cake. I'll have to look at a mold in person, I can't tell how big it really is. If you find one cheaper, let me know.

The Wilton version is really big! Those are regular sized cupcakes in Wilton stands next to it.

walmart has a big cupcake pan (wilton) but I didn't look at the price. Michaels also has a lot of wilton pans so you could check there too
