we had an EI appt today and i was mentioning to the therapist that we're hoping to spruce up our playroom in the next few months

she said, "oh! you should totally get one of those rugs with the scenes that they can use cars to drive around...like they have one that mimics a local community and you can drive to the grocery store, or to the ice cream shop, etc"

she said it could help him along with our work facilitating functional use of toys

i had never heard of such a rug. i asked her where to look for such a thing and she said she wasn't sure

so...is this something any of you have heard of or seen? any suggestions for where to look? :signthankspin:

I saw a bunch of these when I was looking for an area rug for our playroom. If you search amazon, Target, home depot, etc. websites for kids area rugs you'll see them. Ive also seen them at Costco.

also etsy has these great customizable play mats that you can have our own neighborhood on!

It can stay out or roll up when not in use, I think it's a very cool idea

We have this rug:

http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Carpets-LC-142-Train/dp/B000F3PVAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1254316942&sr=8-1

Better picture (colors much more true to life) here:
https://learningcarpets.com/webstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=12&ParentCat=1&CFID=8263888&CFTOKEN=45362142

It's well made and we like it. We play on it all the time. We have thicker carpet, so this works well to build trains on, blocks, run cars, etc. However, I will say that DS is just barely starting to occasionally run his cars on the road or pretend that an animal is swimming in the water. Up until now, he couldn't have cared less what picture was actually on the rug.

Ikea has several and they are really reasonably priced. The smaller one is $10 (no buildings though) and the bigger one is $15.
