We have great mission-style furniture in our bedroom, all matching, very dark oak. But our bed linens are so plain! I've never been big on having a great bed, but now I want one. Fluffy, inviting, with lots of pillows. Right now, we just use a sage down blanket as our comforter, and that probably won't change because my husband overheats with anything heavier. I use another denim blue twin-size down blanket on my side. We each have a standard size pillow, and that's it.

I googled a little bit, but thought I'd check here first. I'd love to find some frugal ideas, because I can't spend too much on this. I'd also love to redo my guest bed, which is even sadder than mine. Both beds are queens.

If I buy accent pillows, what kind do I buy? What shapes? How many? Should I try a bedskirt? We probably won't change our sheets because we like the ones we have. We have a tan set and a coral set.

Thanks for any help!

Have you gone and looked at a TJMaxx or HomeGoods? They have good prices and lots of different styles to choose from. What colors do you like? What colors are your walls. Do you have a headboard & footboard? Need some more details. What style do you like, modern, traditional, do you want a print or pattern or still more plain just nicer?

My bed looks like this one: http://www.ccharm.com/pics/misson.bed.2-064f.jpg

My walls are white and I have dark red sun-blocking curtains, so our room tends to be very dark. We'd love to paint the walls someday, but who knows when that will happen. It will probably be a light chocolate or dark beige once we do paint. I'm hoping to brighten up the bedroom a bit with our bedding. I'd love to keep a mission-style feel, re: colors and patterns.

I've looked a bit at Macy's and BB&B, but am so overwhelmed about what to start with! :o

Are any of these along the lines of what you were thinking?

overstock.com has great search functions for finding ideas in your price range and you can sort by color, style, etc. If you give me more details I can come up with better ideas - can you tell I've got some time on my hands today?

I found a sheet set at kohls I liked and it was much cheaper. I already had a plain white comforter. I just lay the sheet over the bed and use the pillow cases. I also used the quotes from kohls.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply before I posted. Let me go looking some more. BTW, the love mission style furniture - so pretty!

Thank you!! I love that bamboo one. Are the shams the big square pillows? You take those off the bed to sleep, right?

I was thinking we'd need to keep our existing blanket since it's a good weight, but maybe what I could do is have a nice comforter that we take off the bed to sleep. Or pull over to my side. ;)

It is a sheet set and a white down comforter. We also use separate pillows/blankets for sleeping.

This one is fun & colorful. Too much?

This one is the comforter & 2 shams. You could pair it with a white bed skirt and some white throw pillows.

You can always get a white or light beige/sand color comforter and use some fun accessories from a line like this to add great color.

This wouldn't go with your red curtains, but it's nice and bright with an airy feel

I'll keep looking...

The bamboo one makes me want new stuff for our guest room. It comes in other colors too :)
The shams are the ones you see in the picture at the very back by the headboard also with the bamboo print. Of course you could take the comforter off for sleeping and yes, most people take the shams off before going to bed also.

I love these ideas -- especially the ones from Macy's! Of COURSE they would be the most expensive, LOL!

Your 4th link above didn't work...

ETA: I've been thinking about switching out the curtains because they're so dark. I think I can get room-darkening shades in a lighter shade, since the room-darkening layer is usually white.

d'oh, I put the wrong link in before, here's the one I saw at Macy's that's bright and airy.

I love that one, but my husband wouldn't go for it.

It sounds like my existing down blanket would serve as a "coverlet" -- is that right? I might try to find some bedding that coordinates with that color (light sage). Macy's has been having great sales lately, so I think I'll go in person to see what they have.

Yep, it sounds like you would use the blanket you have like a coverlet and put a comforter over it, although if you see a coverlet you like you can always put that over top of your current down comforter.

Yeah my DH would never go for that one either.

My husband suggested replacing our red curtains. YAY! I love this set, but not the blue: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Veronica-8-piece-King-size-Comforter-Set/5535183/product.html

I'm going to see if I can find a tan/brown-tone version of it.

UPDATE: We got lighter curtains (dark khaki) and this bedding set: http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=531349&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results

I LOVE IT!!! Unfortunately, it's polyester and dry-clean only... but we're taking it all off the bed to sleep, so it's OK.

Our room looks so much brighter and homier now. :love-retry:
