I accidentily left my iPod Touch plugged in overnight. I charges in about an hour, and I left it on for like 12. (It was a Christmas present so I feel even more guilty.) Ugh. Is it going to kill the battery? I did this to my Dell labtop and now it cannot hold a charge for more than an hour. :(

Wow I never would have imagined that would be a problem. I over-charge stuff pretty often because I plug it in at night and it is charged way before morning. I hope it's fine!

I think you can let things charge overnight. I always do, I think laptop batteries are notorious for failing to hold a charge after about a year.

I have never had a problem with my Ipod. I left it plugged in at work one weekend and it worked fine.

We leave a lot of things plugged in over night and have never had a problem.

I plug my iphone overnight every night and it's still fine after a year of doing so. I can't imagine it being a problem. They usually warn about trying to use the device before charging.

This shouldn't be a problem. The key is to use the device until the battery is fully discharged first, then recharge and repeat. The battery should never be harmed simply by leaving on the charger a bit too long - its not using it until it is empty that causes problems. Basically the battery "forgets" how much charge it is supposed to hold when you don't run it down often.

I do that all the time - is it a bad idea?

Actually, several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion batteries than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory.

Although memory-free, apply a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges to calibrate batteries with fuel gauge.
