Whatever happened to the standard TRU/Target kind of gifts? Ya know, games, toys, stuff like that? My standard gift for a boy this age is the Sar Wars place setting at PBK for $15, or similar place settings at the Disney Store. Whe in doubt, monopoly/clue/scrabble jr. or Sorry. Now I'm being passively suggested that he loves camping and fishing, or go to this learning express kind of store and look at the REgistry. I don't wanna look at the freakin' registry. Hrmph. Anyone have thoguhts on what to get in this area. Just a kid from school, not family or anything. $20 or less.

Unless its a super good friend, personally, I don't put a lot of thought/effort into the gift. Just get whatever you want (Monopoly Jr is my go-to) and get a gift receipt. Maybe buy it from Walmart so he can exchange for fishing/camping gear????

A hand crank, never-needs-batteries-, durable flashlight.

what about one of those ice cream balls - you put the stuff in and then kick it around. I have heard of people taking those on camping trips.

Or a mess kit. Compass. Cruise the aisles at REI or Wal-mart. They also make lights that attach to a hat brim so you don't have to hold a flashlight.

Fishing lures are fun to pick out (DS picked some for my dad).

eta: binoculars are cool, but not sure about pricing (DS uses the ones my dad gave me years ago).

I was going to suggest a mess kit or cool flashlight, as some other pps mentioned. Another thought: some sort of stargazing or constellation identification guide.

Just go with a gift card to REI, Wal Mart, or Bass Pro Shops. You can order all three of them online. What about a membership to REI, that's only $20 so not much more than the PBK plate set.

What about a Klean Kanteen?

How about one of those flashlight type things that you strap around your head? My kids love them and they are great for reading at home too. They have them at Target...
