Why are totes / bines like these Sterilite bins:

better to use than just regular boxes? Obviously I understand they will probably last forever, but just not sure how to come up w/the $$ to buy at least 10 of these for our garage storage.
Also, what do you do if some of the similar-type items only fill up 1/2 of the bin? It would bug me if I had Xmas stuff and random house decor in the same box.
