I have had this neat black down coat for years. It has a great fitted shape but the zipper gets stuck ALL THE TIME! I hate that. I also dislike that it does not have a hood given that I live in the Midwest.

Anyone have any recs for fashionable black down coats that do not have zipper issues. I need it to look nice as I will wear it to work at times.

I would be ok with a belted one.

Bonus points for coats on sale! :D

Does it have to be down? I think that b/c down coats are so soft and don't hold much shape on their own, that it's more common to have zipper issues, since the fabric is so light. I have had some zipper issues with my down coats too, although I have a cheap one I got for only $10 that has a plastic zipper that has been far superior to metal zippers, b/c it glides much more easily and doesn't snag or get stuck. I have a LL Bean non-down coat (it's not the 3 in 1, I'm not sure which one it is, but it looks like the 3 in 1 w/o that feature), and the zipper on it is nice and I like that it has a hood AND it repels fluid if it's raining of we're getting hit with wet snow, which is my #1 issue with my down coat is that if it is rainy or, "wet" snow, my down coat gets soaked. Plus, I don't have a hood on my down coat either.

Oh, a sticky zipper, I hate that! You just want to get your coat on and go, not fiddle with it every single time. The lands end ones are supposed to be really good.

ETA: here are some ideas

I bought this coat from the Garnet Hill outlet on Saturday:

http://www.garnethill.com/shaped-down-coat/sale-clearance/womens-fashion/coats-jackets/11634

It is on sale on the website for $68 (was $228), but was only $19.20 at their outlet in New Hampshire! I think they might do phone orders. They are only open Fri/Sat/Sundays, but all the women who work there are really nice. Phone is: 603-823-5917

I've only worn it once, but the zipper seems very smooth. It runs a bit big--I'm usually a size 6 and the size 4 fits fine, but it is a nice slim cut. The outlet had only mixed sizes/colors available, but they seem to have everything available online.

Last week I actually threw my down jacket into the trash at TJMaxx. I was so annoyed with it, for the exact same reason - every other time I put it on the zipper got stuck. So I do not recommend a down jacket by Laundry by Shelli Segal. It was cute and comfortable, but not worth it!!!!!!! (eta: the lining of the coat would get stuck in the zipper and make it almost impossible to move the zipper up or down. I had to drop it down around my feet and step out of it more than once.)

I have this one and Love it:

It is waterproof and super warm, and the zipper has not gotten stuck yet! It was perfect this winter, but I couldn't wear it if I was going to be indoors (like at the mall or grocery store) for a long time.

Why not have your zipper replaced? It's fairly inexpensive.

Wow, that Burberry one is beautiful, but $700, um no. Sounds like there are a lot of other good options.

FYI
I passed on the GH coat posted above due to the VELCRO. I hate when it catches on my cashmere sweaters, etc.

I ordered a different GH coat (also down but with snaps) and found it to be very heavy.

I love my LE canvas DOWN coat. But it came in cream/orange/navy, no black. It was much lighter in weight than the GH "down" coat.
ETA: No zipper problems with the LE canvas DOWN coat.

I also LOVE this jacket.

and it does come in black

That Garnet Hill coat is cute. If I lived near the outlet I'd be broke!

I saw this on Athleta. Not on sale, but not $700!

That Burberry coat is GORGEOUS. Maybe it will go on sale . . . for 70% off . . . in July?

I have this chevron down jacket from LE and love it. It's very fitted for a down coat, and the chevron pattern is slimming: http://www.landsend.com/pp/ChevronDownJacket~212713_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::AUB&CM_MERCH=search-_-chevron+down+parka&origin=search

It also comes in a longer version: http://www.landsend.com/pp/ChevronDownCoat~212608_59.html?bcc=y&action=order_more&sku_0=::AUB&CM_MERCH=search-_-chevron+down+parka&origin=search

Black is still available in a few sizes.

I also have a down coat from LL Bean that is pretty fitted and in black. Love it. I bought it last year though and don't see it on their website now. But something to consider if you're still looking next season . . .

:yeahthat:

That's the jacket I bought myself this winter with a coupon & free shipping. The zipper doesn't get stuck unless I am in a hurry and the faux fur trim on the hood is detachable.

Drooooling over that coat. Gorgeous.
There are some cute belted down coats on Bluefly right now (Marc Jacobs, Kenneth Cole, Via Spiga).

I have your dream coat (I didn't pay $700 though) I think I paid $500 hundred something in NJ, so no sales tax. It was a huge splurge for me at the time, but I was having a very tough winter. It's warm and stylish.

Problem: the zipper SUCKS. Always stuck for the past two years - I have had to step out of it at meetings and restaurants - with clients! Two months ago the zipper broke off completely. Although that broken zipper gives one of my toddlers infinite joy, I haven't used it since. My husband took it to the dry cleaner for repair. They told him it would $45 to add a new zipper. So he took the coat back home and it's not fixed. I am wondering if Neiman will take it back to fix it, but I doubt it.

Funny - I've been thinking the same thing all winter...about my Land's End down coat! I love it in every other way - perfect length overall, perfect sleeve length, great cut/fit, fun fake fur trim, warm, waterproof, washable...but that stupid zipper gets stuck almost every time I put it on! It's fine once you get it started, but sometimes I spend 5 minutes trying to get it going! Who has that kind of time after you've gotten kids, etc. ready to go and just need to throw your coat on!

Good luck. I'll be watching to see if you find anything perfect.
