Just curious :)

I'm good at math, but when I hear, as an example, that a child is 28 months old, it usually takes me a second to figure out how old that is :D

This is a pet peeve of mine. After 18M, I'll say "oh, she's nearly 2" or "she'll be 2 in july." After 2, I simply say 2. Who cares if she's 2y, 4m--or worse! 28m. Same for how far apart your children are. Mine are technically 3 years and 5 months, but I just say 3 years apart. That's how it will be when they are in school.

Until 21 months or so, then I just say almost 2. The. 2, 2 and a half etc.

This is exactly what we do. Anything past about 18 mths or so just gets annoying. :)

My feeling is at age 2--although now that DD is 2 I find it hard to not give more detail (especially to other parents who might also have a 2 yo that is many months older than DD.) In general I have been more or less specific with people depending on who they are. For example, when random stranger at the grocery store ask I just round as convenient and have since she was an infant.

somewhere between a 1.5 and 2. Then I round to the nearest 1/2. For example I tell people DD is 3 even though her birthday isn't until Friday.

Yep. I think 18m is the cut-off for me. After that, I'll go with 2, 2.5, 3, and 3.5.

Age 2. I do note 1/2 years once DS is past the halfway mark to his birthday.

LOL. I am a special ed teacher and when I evaluate children, I am supposed to specify their age as either 28 months, or worse yet--- 2.4 years old (2 years, 4 months). Of course thats all fine and dandy when doing an eval, but I am so used to it, I have to stop myself from telling people that DD is 2.2 years old! Imagine the looks I'd get for that one!:ROTFLMAO:

I have heard this rubric, and I pretty much went by it--makes some sense:

"days" to 2 weeks
"weeks" to 2 months
"months" to 2 years

after that, round to the nearest half-year

Cool! So for DC, I just have to suck it up till the end of the year when she's 2 :) Whenever someone asks me how old she is, I feel so silly because this is what goes through my head, huh...12 in November, 13, 14, 15..."16, she's 16 months old...I'm pretty sure." :D

In casual conversation, until age 2.

But between age 2 and 3 DS had a bunch of evaluations and testing done, both through Early Intervention and the Developmental Peds dept at the Children's Hospital. The doctors and therapists always wanted his age in years and months, so I got in the habit of saying "X years, Y months".

Pretty much this, although a few months before 2 I tend to say he'll be 2 in (month)

:yeahthat: Though, I tend to forget and have to count even after 12 months!

I think some people take it way too far. I think it's a way for people to extend the babyhood of thsie DC for as long as they can. My DDs are 2 yrs 4 months apart but I just say 2.5 yrs.

I used months up until 23 months. Then I just said "2" and now it's "two-and-a-half".

Part of it (I think) is that the girls started to learn how to hold up two fingers and say "two" when asked how old they were. There aren't enough fingers for "27 months" :)

I stop by 10 months or so. Then it is "he/she will be one in May" or "just turned one in January" - then after a few months I roll to "almost 1 1/2"

In conversation, to about a year and then reference the nearest birthday, then say 18 months and then reference the next birthday.

I have heard people refer to 40 month olds once. I thought it was a joke, but no.

Usually after age 2 I start tapering it off. I just say 2, 2.5.....

BabbyO

I'd say 2.

But I'm also somewhat selective about who I count in months to. Family members and friends with younger children....I count in months (up to 2).

People without kids...1, 1.5, 2, 2.5. I was talking to an uncle who never had kids, about my son when he was 10 mo old and I said he was 10 mo. The uncle looked at me as if I'd grown 2 heads. His response, "who counts age in months?"

Well my DS is 20 months old right now :icon_twisted:............:innocent:. I plan to stop using months once he hits two years old IRL. Hopefully I will be able to break the habit.

Sometime between 18 months and 2. Once we got close to two, I would usually say "she'll be 2 in a month" etc.

For parents who have kids around the same age, I've found we usually wind up comparing birthday months. Easier for most people than counting out x years y months.

But, I once I told DD she was officially 3 3/4 she will correct me if I try to tell someone she is 3 1/2!

I used to throw the fractions in there before they turned four. Only because people seemed truly shocked out how tall they were. Almost four is different from just turned three.

I stopped at 21 mos. After that it was "almost 2," then 2, 2-1/2, and now "almost 3."

I've been saying "he turned 2 in Jan" or "he's 26 months old."

DS is 21 mos and I say he's 21 months. Probably when he hits 23 months I'll say almost two.
