I need to buy a birthday gift for my niece and nephew who are turning 7 and 10...I'm told they really love games, specifically, ones that involve strategy and being able to obliterate each other :13: Since my world consists of a 2.5 year-old, I'm clueless. Any recommendations?

We recently went to family game night at DD's school and the kids her age were all swarming around a game called Headbanz. You try to guess what the card is on your head by asking questions! It was a lot of fun.

Apples to apples junior, backgammon, hangars and rummikub are popular with my kids right now. My mom even taught them mah jongg which they love.

We like Qwirkle, Blokus and my kids have a Super Why game that has questions according to age/grade level, that they really enjoy.

My 7.5YO dd loves Ponyopoly (i'm guessing it's like monopoly jr.) and Horseopoly (this takes forever to finish though!), Qwirkle, Apples to Apples Jr (you need at least 4 people), and still LOVES Zingo. She got Sorry for christmas but hasn't played yet.

eta: i can't believe i forgot to list No Stress Chess. DD loves this one!

occasionally she plays Rush Hour jr by herself, and occasionally we all play Roads Rivers Rails.

DD (7) likes Clue, Sorry, Yahtzee, Monopoly, just discovered and likes Othello. She enjoys Scene It Disney version and has received Apples to Apples Jr, but hasn't learned to play it, yet.
Our cousins who are three years apart and very competitive really liked Sequence around those ages.

Oh, and I forgot Mastermind...

They may have all of these as they have been around a while, but they are still good games (and their parents might already know how to play them).

I really want to get these games, but alas, my kids are not "into" games :(

We're really enjoying The Magic Labyrinth. http://www.amazon.com/Playroom-Entertainment-89100-Magic-Labyrinth/dp/B003RDJYMM/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1300750482&sr=1-1

It's a fairly quick game to play and you can definitely customize how easy/difficult it is. It's a lot of fun to play.

(There's another board game called Labyrinth by Ravensberger. We have that one, too, but like the one I linked above much better.)

Agreeing with Qwirkle, Blokus, and Mastermind.

There's also a series of games by ThinkFun that can be played solo or with more than one person: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=thinkfun&x=0&y=0

We have Shape by Shape and Chocolate Fix...but most (all?) are very highly rated.

Risk or Stratego. Oldies, but goodies. :)

Agree with Mastermind, Stratego

Also:

Boggle
Risk
Khet: If you haven't heard of this, it's an AMAZING strategy game using lasers and mirrors. Sort of like Chess but games are quicker and it's soooo much fun.
