I am looking for books for DS to read. He is 6.5 years old and an average level reader.

He likes Captain Underpants and has read the first 4 books in the series. They are a bit above his reading level but he finds them funny so he is willing to put in the effort to read them. Plus, he likes re-reading them so it's now a lot easier because he is familiar with the stories.

He loves non-fiction (natural disasters, dinosaurs, reptiles, trains, boats, the list goes on...) but a lot of those types of books with enough information and detail to satisfy him are beyond his reading level so we have just been reading them to him.

We have read a few Magic Treehouse books to him and he's read a few on his own. He enjoys them but they don't seem to capture his attention. Strange, since they seem perfect for him given that he loves non-fiction.

What should I try next? More Captain Underpants? Any other series that might be good for him?

Nate the Great is probably do-able and those are good.

More Captain Underpants would be a hit.

Thanks. He had mentioned that some of the reading groups in school are doing Nate the Great but he hasn't tried them yet. MIL is taking him to the library later today, I'll suggest that.

While I don't find Captain Underpants to be great literature, I am happy that it interests him enought to read it over and over so I don't mind it.

Not sure about the reading level, but for the age some good books are (you may have to read aloud together):

My Father's Dragon series
Jenny Linsky and the Cat Club series (not just for girls...involves sailor cats, boxing cats, etc)
Beverly Cleary books

Ricky Ricotta was a hit here. DS is just able to read the A to Z Mysteries and Geronimo Stilton.

I posted something similar a while ago, but I was looking for nonfiction for my 7 year old. Posters did suggest some great books, so I thought I give you the link anyway...

My 7year old sounds VERY similar to yours in terms of interests. He loves science and nature, but didn't really take to the Magic Treehouse series. He never liked the "scary" parts ;) Not that they're intended to be scary, but you know..

He likes Nate the Great, Cam Jansen, Capt. Underpants & Magic Schoolbus like others have suggested. My goal is just to get him to read on his own, so if he likes Capt. Underpants, I'd stick with similar types of books. My son is reading "Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute (http://www.amazon.com/Lunch-Cyborg-Substitute-Jarrett-Krosoczka/dp/0375846832/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1300817043&sr=8-1)" now and laughing a lot :)

My guys like many of the series already mentioned, but my all-boy 6 1/2 year old thinks the Bad Kitty books (I think there are 3 in the series so far) are hilarious.

My 6 y.o. DS is reading the A to Z Mystery series--we've only got three more to go! He loves them.
FWIW, he didn't really take to Magic Treehouse either.
