What do you get a 8 year old girl for her birthday? I've been buying mostly boy gifts.....have no clue about a 8 yo girl's gift....any suggestions? Thanks.

Board games. Ones by Cranium are usually really good. Some 8yo girls are in full on tween mode wrt clothes, make up type stuff, liking popular characters while others are into dolls and that type of play. Board games seem to span that divide.

Craft sets would be another choice.

The Klutz books are cute. DD1 got a lettering one for her 7th bday, shows how to make all kinds of fancy decorative lettering.

I've been giving this a lot as a gift to girls this age - Hoppers Game. It's well designed, all the pieces store in its little box, doesn't take up a lot of space, and you play it alone. http://www.amazon.com/Think-Fun-6701-ThinkFun-Hoppers/dp/B00000JVRT/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1300905809&sr=1-1

Also gave a Perler bead set similar to this one (but garden themed) to an 8 year-old girl recently and stocked up because they were on sale at Jo-Ann's.

Garden set makes a unicorn, peacock, flowers, etc. http://crafts-sewing.hsn.com/perler-beads-garden-frenzy-kit-with-play-scene_pf-967264_xp.aspx?&rdr=1&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engine-_-Froogle-_-Crafts%20and%20Sewing-_-967264

My 8 YO loves games, craft sets--sewing, knitting, weaving, clay, beading, making friendship bracelets and playing cats cradle (Klutz makes a really cute friendship braclet and cats cradle books with a special string) and still plays with her American Girl dolls.

It really depends on the girl. DD is 8 and loves dragons and dinosaurs, legos and that kind of stuff, her best friend is into clothes, dolls and girly stuff. Sorry not much help! A nice craft kit of some kind would go down well with any girl I think. A ds game? How much did you want to spend?

My 8 yr. old DD really like Barbies and Polly Pockets. Her birthday was last week, and the PP were her favorite. She also loves make-up (for kids) and lip gloss.

Ask the mom about her interests, then report back to us and we will tell you what to get! If you cannot do that, how about Pictionary Jr., Charades for kids, clue Jr.

I am a boy gift giver too with 6 nieces. These always seem to be appreaciated:
Friendship bracelet books/kits
$8 - a dollar per year (for some reason 8 singles is more exciting than bigger bills) + whatever else you want to give
Target or Barnes and Noble Gift Cards
Scrapbook kits
Good quality water bottles (i.e., Sigg, Naglene,...)
Movie passes
Gift cert for mani and/or pedi

Happy gift giving!
