I'm looking for a bag for an 8 yr old girl. She wants a cross-body/messenger style bag that can hold a couple of small items and a water bottle. She prefers something plain and simple (no characters, minimal embellishments/nothing flashy).

I've looked around online and am struggling to find something her style in the right size. I can find larger book bag sizes, adult sizes, smaller toddler sizes . . .

I thought of maybe finding an small women's bag, but I'm not sure how short the strap needs to be for an 8 yr old.

any ideas?

TIA!

Have you looked into some of the tween stores...I think that stores such as American Eagle, Aeropastale, Abercrombie, etc. have tween versions. Maybe they'd have something like that. There is Justice too, but I'd suspect they'd be a bit embelished.

What about an outdoor store like REI? Something like this:

Something like this: http://www.rei.com/product/810364

Or this: http://www.rei.com/product/786591

I would also look at REI. They have some great small messenger bags. I've also seen some cute ones at Gap.

The 8 year old girls around here are definitely in to Vera. There messenger bags seem to fit them well.

Another vote for REI especially if she doesn't want all the embellishments on it.

LeSportSac has some cute bags that are small and light weight. They often have some at TJMaxx for cheap.

I saw some smaller, kid sized messenger bags at Target yesterday (in the bags/luggage section). Will add a link later if I can find them/get a chance.

Ebags has all kinds of good, nylon bags (bought a large diaper bag for a good price), and they usually have coupons. I see le sports sacs at TJ Max in a med size. The tween stores is also a good idea. I think I saw one at ON, but it was pretty big and awhile ago.

Have you ever seen Kipling bags? They might be great for her. They are solid colors and come with a detachable monkey that's cute. I have this one: http://www.ebags.com/product/kipling/alvar/132654?productid=1343816

thanks for all the suggestions! i went with this bag in blue:

it is really nice. i haven't given it to her yet but her mom and her brother think that she will like it. (i ran by them a bunch of other options and they both thought this one was the best.)

i like it so much, i may just get one for dd1 too!

great pick - i love sherpani!

now i do too! i didn't know what to expect so i was pleasantly surprised. looks like good quality, nice organization, well designed. i like that it is "earth friendly" too.

i'm looking at their stuff now to see if i might want something for me.
