DD is almost 4. We do not allow her to go outside alone yet. Our backyard is not fully fenced. Anyway, I found out that she can completely unlock the sliding glass door including the safety lock at the bottom. I need to put another lock on it way up high. Anyone have suggestions of what type of a lock to use for a sliding glass door and where to find it?

I would use a locking pin, you can get them at HD.

I think our 2 year old is a few hours from figuring this out. I need to add something up high.

We are installing a gate at the top of the deck stairs this weekend. They are long and end in concrete. That way if we forget the lock going in and out so often we have an extra barrier.

Just found this at BRU online:

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4447521

This is what we need. I do not think DD would attempt to get through a 4 inch opening I hope not anyway.

My inlaws use a piece of wood at the other end, non-opening side. I think that's for safety reasons. That wood is lodged so tightly in there, there would be no a 4 year old could take it out.

We have something like this: http://www.totsafe.com/proddetail.asp?prod=2005

It works great.

we got something at lowes, It ataches to the middle part of the door and you pull it down and turn to lock it open and then turn and it snaps back up to lock it closed. It works really well

I just ordered the safety first lock from BRU. It sits up in the right corner so there is no way DD can get to it. We will see how well it works.....(and whether we break it--meaning DH and I).

We use a tension shower-curtain rod up high, out of DD's reach. It is easy to put in and take out, and no damage to the door.

great idea! We have 4 sliding doors on our main level and a pool so this was a big issue for us. We moved here when the kids were 1 and 3.5. There were old locking pins, but they were not working properly anymore. My dh installed a wooden dowel at the top that rests in what you use to mount a closet rod. You remove the pole when you want to open the door. I like that it is not easy enough for them to remove. The doors are wood frame andersons so it kinda blends in.

Just in case you have a home alarm system, you can set it so that each entry chimes as the doors open.

We changed the setting last summer and it has been fantastic. We don't have a huge house and the kids will rarely try to go outside by themselves, but on the rare occasion they try, I know! and I like knowing if /when DH comes home and I'm not by the front of the home.
