Two unrelated 5 years old birthday parties...1 boy and 1 girl. I have no idea what's cool these days...

Any recommendation would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Get them both a board game. Hullaballoo, Monopoly or Clue Jr., Blokus (check age recommendation on that), Uno... Or go with a book and Lego set for the boy and an art or craft set and a book for the girl.

:yeahthat: Couldn't agree more with these recommendations!! My DD does arts and crafts all day long - paints, colorings, water colors, playdough, decorating stuff. If you go with art stuff, just make sure it's washable!!

My DD got this and loves it - and it's great for the car too, because it's self contained

And you can never go wrong with Hex bugs!! :p

My daughter turns 5 in just a few days. She loves:

dolls
art
hopscotch
jump rope
Webkinz
Pillow Pets

Do the kids live near a beach? I'm getting these for my daughter, and I know they'll be a huge hit.

This kind of thing is a hit at that age too:

Not mentioned were playdoh kits. My DD loves these. She just got a Hello Kitty set for her 5th birthday and it's been a huge hit with her (and her brother, lol). We have a ton of different sets from over the years and they are played with all the time.

You actually can go wrong with Hex bugs - if they have a younger sister or brother. Choking hazard alert!

Keep younger sibs in mind when buying gifts at that age. Skip bead kits, shrinky dinks, squinkies, board games with small pieces.

My DDs very favorite gift at her 5 year birthday this year was an 'artist kit' - compact kit with poster paints, water colors, pastels, pencils, brushes and markers. They gave her a blank artists pad along with it and the kit has kept her entertained for hours and hours.

She also loved a large floor jigsaw puzzle she got. And new reader books are always a hit with 5 yr olds!
