Good idea or bad idea -- marble table?

Anyone have a marble table top for their everyday dining table? What are your thoughts, either positive or negative?

I do not have one. Awhile ago we remodled a kitchen and I briefly considered marble countertops. My research showed that marble stains very easily. So unless you like a lived-in look, it may not be for you.

I had marble countertops in my last house and in this house I have a marble island (which is our main eating area).

It's very hard to keep them looking "perfect". If you leave food on there (red wine, coffee etc) it will stain. You will probably get etching marks from water glasses (hard water) and vinegary stuff also etches. It also chips more easily than you expect.

All that said, I like having it and would do it again. :)

We have marble counters, and they are definitely high maintenance. We seal them every year. They still stain easily. They can also scratch pretty easily.
