Is this a phase?

My girls are 4.5 and have always been sensitive. Lately, this has sort of morphed into them crying about every.little.thing. Whining, I am very used to, but this is different. These are sincere tears, not fake. They seem to be genuinely upset and will just lose it at the drop of a hat, crying like their heart is broken when I tell them they can't have another cup of juice or something equally unimportant. We went from tears being rare to crying daily or more than daily. Is this an age/stage thing?

I remember that age being tough emotionally.

I am guessing phase. As I tell DH when DS1 is having a particularly emotional day - the problems that we think are so tiny (no more juice, can't play with particular friend, favorite shirt is dirty) are pretty big to them at the time. And they don't have the emotional control that we do. Hang in there - they will be on to something else soon enough!
